PS3 / Xbox 360 Appreciation and Collecting Thread - Are They Retro Yet?

Oh I agree, the Dual Shock 3 and the Dual Shock line in general had multiple revisions, ether to improve quality or cost (maybe both). Probably too many model numbers to keep track of.
I know the PS2 Dual Shock 2 controllers had revisions A though H (Maybe more ?).

Yeah, I find the analog PS1 controllers feel much more solid and heavy than the later PS2 dual shocks. I’ve taken them both apart, and you can easily tell the cost cutting measures that were taken.

A & H refer to the manufacturer, Alps and Hosiden. There are M controllers too for Mitsumi. But even within those manufacturers there are like 1000 different variants of PS2 controller.

DualShock 1s are much, much better than any DualShock 2. The later cost-reduced PSone branded DS1s are my fav because the dpad just feels better, but any DS1 is better than a mushy DS2 and especially early DS2s with the messed up dpads.

Agreed… my favourite PS controller is a red PSone branded controller.

I should get an older PS1 controller since I mostly use my Japanese PS2 for PS1 games, it’s really true that the D-Pad on the DualShock 2 (all of them? I’ve got five spanning all the generations of hardware, through to the final 2007 PS2 Slim) is terrible. Really unreliable response and just doesn’t feel good to nudge about.

The worst thing about DS2 for PS1 games is the pressure sensitive buttons all seem to need to be pressed quite hard to get any button response. Like rather than coming on at say any detected press it needs to be 70% force or something. It might not sound like a big deal but it can lead to a lot of missed inputs.

Oh my bad, I didn’t realize Sony outsourced the manufacturing of the controller
As Sony already did or used to do so much OEM component manufacturing themselves.

I haven’t had that experience with my two DS2’s. They feel, to my hands, identical to PS1 dual shock controllers. I may be misremembering though.

Buying up PS3 games for peanuts right now. Looking for games which were at least as good on PS3 as 360, and mostly haven’t been ported.

‘Recently’ got Crysis 2/3, Darkness 1/2, Duke Nukem Forever, Prince of Persia, Dishonored, New Vegas, Demons Souls, Dark Souls, and both the Tomb Raider reboot and the HD trilogy. All for a couple of bucks each. This is the golden time I think for these.

My TV is crap (mid range 4K Sony LCD from like 4 years ago, really pretty bad) so any newer games would be basically wasted on it. And can’t afford a new one right now. So this is the perfect time to play older stuff.

Played through the Tomb Raider reboot after looking at comparisons online I think I prefer the look of it over the next gen remastered version. Was decent, better than the Uncharted games IMO, though lame story/characters.

If there ever was a time to collect for PS3, it’s now. I completely missed that generation and I recently found a Super Slim and a lot of about a dozen games for a good price. Then I found another lot of heavy hitters of the generation for an average of less than $4/game. All of a sudden I have a decently sizeable collection for the price that some of these games are going to be going for in a few years when they become “vintage” and “retro”.

Yeah it’s the absolute bottom now.

Got COD4 and Black Ops which I played friends’ copies of back in the day (and enjoyed them). They maintained the value on ebay (were still like AU$50) at least until a couple of years ago when I looked, but are now AU$5 delivered each, I guess two gens old is when people dump games.

Finally got around to deep cleaning my PS3 slim. I noticed I couldn’t get it to accept discs and the fan was quite loud. Once I got everything taken apart I noticed there was a bunch of dust in it so I was able to clean it all out. Once I opened my disc drive to see if I could find out the issue and it turned out my disc drive had two DVDs and an SD card in it.

I noticed after cleaning the disc drive out it still wouldn’t eject discs. After reading turns out the felt around the disc drives get hard over time. I trimmed it off and now it works fine.

Taking the phrase “dual layer DVD” a bit literally aren’t we? :grinning:

Snes controllers can still be had for cheap if Otten from Japan. I have 4 Japanese ones on standby if I ever need to swap out one for my 2 NA ones

Two DVDs inside? How … does that even happen???

I had my ps3 sitting at toddler level. They like to stick random things in stuff.

I hear that. I’m just surprised the device would take them both. Toddlers are surprisingly persistent though…

Anyone know of any good 3rd party PS3 controllers. I dusted off my PS3 after a long time and my Sixaxises just went haywire, both of them. I read up and this is pretty common sadly. Sony’s QC has really gotten to crap.

You know I think you can use a Dual Shock 4 on the PS3, wired of course.
