PS3 / Xbox 360 Appreciation and Collecting Thread - Are They Retro Yet?

Bought Alundra for PSone classics and Drakenguard 3 for PS3 off PSN.

I had Drakenguard 3 in my wishlist for a long time waiting for a sale, not sure when I’ll get around to it but the series has always intrigued me. There is a physical version but it has a funky box design that would really clash with the rest of my PS3 physical games:

Drakengard 3 is great… if you can stomach terrible frame rates.

I loved it but I know it’s not for everyone.

I need to get back to it, I even bought all the DLC…

Just remembered the game from a crazy period where Square Enix was experimenting with all kinds of random stuff like those DLC drinks in Bravely Default and charging for Japanese audio in Drakengard 3.

Hi, I am thinking of retro buying a PS3 to play it on my 4/3 CRT.
Do you guys know PS3 games that can run in a full 4/3 image ?
Apparently :
GTA4 and 5
Limbo
Motorstorm 1
Resistance 1
VF5

Blazing Angels. I actually played my ps3 on my sony triniton from 2010-2015 so I remember that stuff

So I was seeing on ERA that PS3 controllers are rare now? I hope those that preferred internal batteries are now regretting it lol.

They’ve been pretty rare for a couple years now I think. I bought a new one a couple years ago, but based on that thread I think it’s also fake, lol.

I still have two. But their batteries died long ago. Can you use them wired only?

Part of the problem is there aren’t great alternatives for full compatibility PS3 controllers, pretty well all 3rd party ones are crap. And there are a LOT of right-looking fakes out there, getting a verified genuine one is what makes it more expensive. Of course you could use an DualShock 4 but that comes with issues on PS3, like no home button support.

I have 3 DualShock 3s now, one of which I only use on my PSP go. For PS3 I’ve been tending to use a DualShock 1 plus a brook PS2->USB converter which has great compatibility and a home button on the adapter itself.

They work wired, but it’s pretty easy to open them up and put in a replacement battery. They’re not soldered in, just make sure to shop around for a high quality one.

Yeah, these have become scarce and more expensive. I should get another one for good measure. I’d like to get a fairly new one. I bought a new PS3 super slim in 2013 just before the PS4 came out and I’ve not used it all that much in the last 7 years so I’m pretty sure the one that came with it is good for a while. My second one is older.

Interesting solution!

There must be tons available. Surprised it’s harder to find now

Did anyone else find the final run of DualShock 3 controllers was embarrassingly low quality? I picked up one of the last PS3 Super Slims (the ones with the PS4-style packaging fonts and design) and I was shocked by how cheap, creaky and flex-y the plastics were on it. Night and day from my 2007 Sixaxis.

There are different variants and have been various quality through most of the life of the system. I picked up a Super Slim with a great feeling white DS3 but within a month got a red creaky dollar-store-plastic feeling DS3 from a local Best Buy.

Ah, so I was just unlucky then. Annoying - the battery on my Sixaxis is dead.

Hell even good condition ps2 controllers are hard to come by these days.

Maybe it’s just my region, but I still find ps3, ps2 and even some ps1 controllers in goodwill and value village all the time. So much so, that I stopped grabbing them because I already have at least 10.

OG Xbox controllers are also quite common.

Earlier on the year I picked up a couple original ps1 controllers (the ones without analog) for $1 each in a game store bargain bin.

For me, it’s NES, SNES, SMS and even Genesis controllers that are getting hard to find. I also never see xb360 controllers that aren’t totally trashed.

I recall on a podcast a while back that John Linneman from Digital Foundry noted a particular model number of DS3 that was the preferred type, as they did change the internals or something. Can’t recall the podcast or the model numbers, though.

Not going to listen to this again but I’m 100% sure it was this.

Yep, I was thinking it was a Back in My Play episode! I might scrub through this and try to find out what he was talking about. I’m curious.

I’m so happy for 8bitdo.
