RGB High Score Battle! - Week 65 & 66: Outrun

Site is updated! Here’s our current week details:

WEEK 65 & 66
Game: Outrun
Platform(s): Saturn
Challenge Type: High Score
Game Details: Full Game, Normal Difficulty/Time, Any Route
When: Dec 7th - Dec 20th, 2020
Chosen By: raskulous

I’ve updated the website with the new game, let’s get racing!

Good luck everyone, please submit your scores via screenshot or video by replying directly to this post!

RULES

  1. Competitions last two weeks, close on Sunday night @ midnight.
  2. Post screenshots in this thread as proof.
  3. The winner from the previous week chooses the next game to play.
  4. You cannot choose twice in a row. 2nd place will choose if someone wins two weeks in a row.
  5. If there’s a tie, the person that submitted the high score first gets to choose.
  6. Games must be high score compatible (think “arcade style scores” like Pac-Man, or Spy Hunter, not Super Mario).
  7. Emulation is okay (MAME is often the best for high scores).
  8. No save state manipulation (pausing to take a break is fine though).
  9. Submit scores as soon as you get them! To keep the competition rolling and fair, do not hold on until the last moment to submit.

Points will be awarded for the entrants, based on the position finished for the week. This is to encourage wider participation, and the points will be posted each week as well as on the website.

POSITION POINTS AWARDED
1st: 10 points
2nd: 7 points
3rd: 5 points
4th: 3 points
5th: 2 points
Any honest attempt: 1 point

Overall, we should keep it simple. This is just a good time, not a crazy official high score competition! Game plays should ideally be short and fun so people that can’t invest hours into this can still compete. Obviously we are working on a trust based system here, so don’t ruin it for the others!

Here’s a simple website I made to keep track of the competition.

A special note on this one: You can play the game in 60fps (smooth) mode, making this game arguably better than the arcade original.

To activate the mode: Go to Options, highlight Game Mode, then hold A + C and press Left or Right - On my XBone controller, the default buttons for A + C was A + Left Bumper. Hope this helps!

Also, if you don’t have the game for your Saturn, it emulates beautifully with Retroarch and the Yaba Sanshiro core. I couldn’t get it to work with any other emulator or Retroarch core.

Good luck everyone!

Okay I’ll submit first. Super fun game, I have never really played much of it outside of the arcade when I was a kid.

My first try. I couldn’t get YabaSanshiro to work, even through RetroArch
I downloaded Mednafen with the MedSat front end.
I was never really good at the arcade version.

Did you get the 60fps mode to work at least?

Did another couple attempts, improved very slightly.

Oh I just tried it. Makes it easier to play too I think, or maybe I’m just getting used to the game? I tried a zig zag route and it seemed much harder. I think I remember all lefts or all rights is easiest. Will have to try another time.

Yeah I think all left is easiest, but I don’t know

Edit: Just found this on a forum

Easiest route is all lefts. Next easiest is all rights, although stage 4 on that one can give you fits.

Hardest route I can’t recall but I think it is (at the forks) right, left, left, left.

The highest scoring route is (at the forks) right, left, right, right. This route is the shortest, leaving the most time on the clock, which at a million points bonus per second at the end gives you the highest score.

I really thought this one would get more traction… cmon guys, where are your Outrun scores??

Does the 3DS version count for this contest? If so, is there a specific setting I should use to line up with default arcade settings?

I would love to get in on this but I only have the switch and 3ds versions.

I don’t think it’s the same, but I don’t know, honestly.

If you have a computer it seems to emulate really nicely.

I looked into emulation briefly, but got busy with other things. I like Outrun so I wanted to play this; just haven’t had time to return to it yet.

In case we are counting the 3DS version…

Lucky run for me. I’ve always sucked at this game but sort of figured out how to break and shift gears better this time. It paid off a lot.

Still never made it to the end. (there is an end right?)

I really don’t know if there’s is a difference in the scoring or not. Anyone know?

Since there are no objections, we’ll just go ahead and allow it @Peltz. I have a hard time believing that they would change it from the arcade scoring anyway.

So then, what game would you like to play next?

Oh man, it’s been a long time since I’ve won one of these haha. And as you guys may have guessed - I’m going to choose one that is the fastest time through a level again. Not sure why, but these are my favorite types of high score battles. If there are no objections, let’s do this one:

In Super Mario 64, let’s compete on race times against Koopa the Quick in Bob-Bomb Battlefield.

For those who don’t remember it, this is the first level of Super Mario 64, star #2. You will just need a save file where you defeated King Bob-Bomb to get star #1. Here’s how to initiate the race:

The game has a built in timer for this challenge. Fastest time wins!!!

You can complete the race taking any route - there are no limitations on using cannons or warps.

Nice, sounds like fun! If someone would upload a save file at the right spot, I think it would be a big help for us everdrive users.

Yea, agreed. I wonder if there is a save file online that has this already unlocked for those that haven’t played it much. I imagine most people who have played Mario 64 will have it available though.
