SCANLINE SCREENSHOT THREAD. BECAUSE 240p IS ALL THE P'S I NEED. (56k warning)

Looks very much like my KV-M1400D. But your geometry is better. You might consider adjusting the POT’s on the chassis just a tad to get rid of the slightly too aggressive overscan.

Very nice

I think it’s a BE2 chasis, might be the same? Yeah totally needs adjustment. I think the red and blue need a slight focus adjustment too.

Gunstar with Composite Blend (Mister).

I’ve noticed C.Blend is a bit too much for 256x224 games (like Street Fighter 2’, Sunsetriders etc) but I think the majority of MD games seem to be 320x224. I’m wondering if they could add an option for those games.

Scratchy static? no, it’s mist/smoke!

Amazing how much the mist effect depends on the blending. Very revealing.

Earthworm Jim really embraces it and it’s kind of amazing how they create whole other tones.

The tyre is using the same grey like the ones next to it but when it blends with the black lines it becomes darker. It’s a really cool technique.

Super cool. This same effect is actually used in Castlevania 3 on the Fami/NES.

I found these old posts for de-dithering on the Shmups OSSC thread.

I keep thinking of what could have been with this device, but that was about 20 firmware updates ago. :frowning:

It seems a lot of devs for various consoles were taking advantage of the blend. I kind of wish they added CB to every core! It’s interesting looking at Treasure MD games where they use patterned dithering which looks okay in crisp RGB but then there’s some art, like the earthwork jim ‘streaks’, that wholly embrace the horizontal blur of composite and look weird in RGB.

@Voltz Ah nice, I think I remember seeing this discussion before but never really paid attention to it until HD retrovision said they were developing a device that would allow you to add it to games: https://www.retrorgb.com/hd-retrovison-shows-transparency-color-depth-restoration-algorithm-to-minimize-dithering.html

Btw did anybody test a 2/3-chip SNES in RGB and dithering? I’m wondering if it would blend the water in Super Mario World with it’s softer output.

I have one that I used until I recently upgraded to a 1-chip just a few months ago. It definitely does not blend enough to merge a dithered pattern like that. The pixels bleed a bit, but don’t actually blend if that makes sense.

See above, you still have individual pixel separation. But there’s just a bit of bleeding in areas of higher contrast. The picture just looks muddier. Not like the smooth blending we’re seeing with people’s filters in this thread.

Then again, I imagine the effect depends a lot on the CRT you are using too. On a pin-sharp 800 line set that’s in mint condition, it doesn’t blend. But maybe if you drop that down to 400 it does?

Yeah, that does look a bit different to the composite blend. That’s a good point about the CRT. I doubt that Sony I used in those shots is above 450tvl, I wonder how it looks on the portable Panasonic slot mask I have.

Play around with PCSX2/RPCS3. On PCSX2, most of the games in main contents, big titles/menu/UI are fine, but in some cases such as small text - especially subtitles are pretty messed and unreadable. Guess PS2/PCSX2 raw output is 448i, but 240p native scanlines are fixed.
