Yoshi’s Story N64 in S-Video on Sony CRT
Yoshi’s Story N64 in S-Video on Sony CRT
Some shots from the opening of TwinBee Yahho. Gorgeous looking 2D art, and fully vocalized too. Best opening in a shooting game.
I loved Yoshie’s Story as a kid, but it really is a shame they went with the pre-rendered look for this game. It’s such a step backwards from YI in the graphics department (never mind the simpler gameplay).
Everything about Yoshi’s Story was a disappointment after Yoshi’s Island. It may not have been labelled Yoshi’s Island 2 but that’s what pretty much everyone expected it to be in terms of quality.
It’s strange, some levels look fantastic but others don’t have enough depth and have horrible colours (the caves spring to mind).
I noticed something odd as well, on the levels with the stitched green trees, there’s some parts where you can see through to the background. But if you move slowly and watch that gap, occasionally it fills. It looks as if the sides of the tree get hit by an edge smoother or something. Just in general you can notice some smudging of the textures when walking, even on S-Video.
I’ve got no idea what resolution it runs in normally, and some levels pan out, the sniff move zooms in… Compared to crispness of Yoshi’s Island it just never compared imo.
The Japanese version here controls a little worse as well, he slips around when you have the tongue out or something, I can’t quite put my finger on it! I remember they made some changes for the west, to scoring, and supposedly made it harder… but there’s no saving in this one, so tbh this version seems the (slightly) harder one.
I’ve never completed Yoshi’s Story but I love the art in the opening level, I agree the cave level is subpar though but from what little I’ve seen from the game I think it looks fairly decent overall. The gameplay is a big letdown and a huge step back from Yoshi’s Island however so I’m not surprised people don’t talk about it more.
Interesting I didn’t know the western versions go tweaked.
Yeah I always overlooked Yoshi’s Story at the time, the graphics always looked weird to me. Now I’m on a Yoshi kick and was playing Yoshi’s Island lately. This prompted me to check out YS, and I really like the look of it. Thinking of buying it now.
Trying to get all melons stressed me the fuck out in Yoshi’s Story. Why would I do that to myself?
It’s a trap I fall into on all Nintendo side scrolling platformers. I start collecting really difficult stuff when I should just be enjoying the romp through the levels.
I think part of the appeal of Yoshi games is getting all the collectibles in every nook and cranny. I don’t stress too much though, in my current Yoshi’s Island playthrough I’m cool if I get a 70-80 score on a level.
To keep the Yoshi theme going. Yoshi’s Island, Wii via Snes9x emulator outputting 240p via component. Coupled with the SNES Classic controller that connects to th Wiimote, it’s probably the closest I’ll get to an authentic SNES experience.
That looks fantastic
Been testing out the GBS 8200 with the PS2 it’s really excellent so far and chains well with my OSSC

Man I really like the softer look on CRT’s + the bloom. SOTN looks so good there. I have a ton of shots of it from my LCD, but it’s missing that soft glow that really fits the atmosphere.
Yep, the candles in this game on a CRT are just perfect. When you get that phosphor glow it’s straight up chef’s kiss.
It’s really hard to capture that depth of bloom in photos. Really wish I knew more about photography to make it happen.
