Not sure why, but decided to take the same shot on my 20l5 to see how it compares. I really feel strongly that softer CRT images are better for this game. This is too sharp.
Agreed. Definitely need to get a consumer set one of these days. Keeping an eye out for a 20" D-Series, but they seem to be like unicorns.
I have a 20M2U which is a nice balance of scanlines/softness, but I keep it in storage for now until I move to a place with more space that allows me to do a multi-crt setup. I use the 20L5 as my main just because it’s versatile and handles 480p so well.
But I definitely think it’s overkill for 240p. So darn sharp lol.
Tried this for the first time today, had no idea what I was doing lol. Beautiful shots.
That’s good that they are decent. I bought some $10 RGB cables off eBay and they are complete garbage. Everything looks like it has a dark black drop shadow on the right side. Completely worthless.
I had a feeling their cable would at least be decent because their Saturn cable is also really good. There’s definitely a little noise and interference but the picture is pretty sharp and you don’t notice it in motion.
Only got it because retro access didn’t have their 480p SCART cable available at the start of the month. Will be hawking those. My setup for S-video is ridiculously convoluted lol, one cable with a switch would be so much better.
We always have a lot of Capcom love in this thread but how about some Midway love! Mortal Kombat 3 on PS1 on a Sony CRT in RGB.
I used to love playing that game
Best Mortal Kombat! I played the hell out of UMK3 but I’m having a hard time remembering which system I played most on. I think it must have been a mix of the Genesis port at one of my friends’ houses and in the arcade, 'cause I don’t recall having it for the PS1 or Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64. I gotta add that to my collection at some point.
Did some further adjustments to my “new” monitor on my Neo25 cab. Mostly satisfied with the results, with old arcade monitors I’ve learned to just leave them at “good enough”.
Recently I got Resident Evil on PC, knowing about the hideous upscaled backgrounds (I know the original assets were lost unlike RE0). I got the AI upscaled HD mod and while an improvement, it still doesn’t look 100% great, especially in terms of how the models and backgrounds blend together. So I booted up RE on Gamecube and wasn’t happy how it looks on my HD CRT (JVC DT-V1710CG). There’s obvious line interlaced flicker althogh not as pronounced as my BVM. I tried it on the A13SU, the one I prefer for N64 games, and I think it’s a big improvement. Very smooth and organic looking, completely imperceptible flicker unless you put your nose right up to the screen and stare.
TM-A13SU
DT-V1710CG for comparison and shot to give a rough static approximation of the lines and flickering seen in person
I thought your TM-A13SU died? I still remember those amazing S-video N64 shots from the old place. Slot mask and low tvl really work well with that console.
Might be thinking of someone else? There was another guy on the old forum that had one. I got mine NIB a few years ago. It’s still practically new.
Sounds like a great set. I really wish I had something like that for pure-interlaced content. The 20L5 does well enough compared to modern screens, but it’s certainly not ideal.
Ah, I see. Man, so cool it’s practically new! Great pics
I think a lot of security monitors and non-Trinitron consumer TVs can pull this off. Keep an eye out and you could probably find one in good or possibly new condition for not much. Tho I noticed with everything retro blowing up the past year even these mostly ignored cheap monitors that could once be had for $30-50 have double or tripled in price.
No doubt it’s doable. But for me, it’s a lack of space. I could only use one CRT in my current living space so the 20L5 is the one I chose due to its versatility. Eventually, I would love a bigger setup where I can have a dedicated soft 480i/240p set, and use the 20L5 purely for 480p.
Some S-video shots. Kind of a convoluted setup (and why the Retrotink 5X looks more and more reasonable for that $300) but seriously it’s such an underrated signal. Feel like it’s like 90% of the way to RGB in terms of clarity
Yoshi’s Story
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike - Dreamcast + 240p button combo
Mario Party 3 aka the GOAT. First time my brother and I ever played any other character but Mario and Luigi since we got this game 20 years ago (damn). Had to take a shot to commemorate lol
