Oh wow. What system is it for?
If youāre looking for RGBS out for a consumer SCART CRT (from your GBSā VGA out) I recommend, Tim Worthingtonās sync combiner
Final Fantasy V (SNES) - Consumer Trinitron 14"
Never played this game, only booted it up to check for jail bars. Thereās some nice background art in this
itās for all the modern systems, this one in particular is the Switch
this set looks so good, the softness is pretty much my ideal
Iāve never played V before, the sprite work looks better than VI but itās probably the magic of this set
I found a raw shot of the first shot and it seems to be a bit of both
Raw definitely seems to lack something! Yeah, Iāve been enjoying the softness of the non-1CHIP SNES, the blending seems to have the effect of keeping sub-details in check, like the wood grain on the flooring in LTTP is so sharp on the 1CHIP it sort of stands out more than it should, at least thatās how I feel about it.
An OG SNES just looked a bit too soft for me on a PVM. I upgraded a few years ago to a 1-chip and it really made games pop afterwards.
But on a consumer set I bet it would look way better. What set are your shots from? They do look rather ideal.
I donāt think Iāve ever seen a one chip in person. I bought an SNES sometime in 2017 and never bothered to find one to upgrade to.
Itās pretty much as sharp as a Genesis Model 1 via SCART. Similar clean output.
Hmm ok. Iāll try and compare the two and see if I notice the Genesis is much sharper. Iāve got one of the earlier āHDā model 1s.
I guess that makes sense since high TVL lays everything bare. Iāve used 240p games (line-multiplied) on a PC CRT or a poor manās BVM as some call them, and theyāre so close to looking like LCDs with fake scanlines that I donāt use them anymore.
This is shot from my Lacie Electronblue IV (Trinitron) PC CRT, you can see how the abrupt pixel edges taper off, āphosphor bulgingā looks kind of clinical, and so on a CRT that has ālowā TVL youād get a bit more blending between things like trouser highlights, trouser mid-tones and shadow areas I find. I noticed when messing with MiSTer shadow masks that blur can be hidden by coarse grilles/masks, perhaps, like the N64, non-1CHIPS shine best on consumer sets?
I have a bunch of PVMs which Iāve not tested a non-1CHIP SNES on yet, iirc nothing over 750TVL, I should probably get some comparisons, maybe check it out on the PC CRT too to see how well it deals with the horizontal blur of the SNES.
The shot of Zelda is from a 90s consumer 14" Trinitron set, surprisingly detailed and shows the difference between a 1CHIP, TVL almost looks like itās at the level of my Sony KX-14CP1 which I think was sold as a prosumer set.
Okay, just tried this out⦠the Genesis is definitely sharper. You can really tell the difference in the smaller profile pics of the characters.
Iāve never really noticed before, but to be honest, I actually like the way the SNES looks. I certainly wouldnāt spend money looking for another system to make it look sharper.
Genesis Model 1 āHDā, RGB SCART ā JVC 32 D-Series
SNES 2-CHIP, RGB SCART ā JVC 32 D-Series
I donāt know if this makes things any clearer but this is what Iāve observed when using consumer sets, the perception of sharpness thanks to the mask or grille hiding some of the blur between the gaps and the less āgapā (usually found on high TVL sets?) the more obvious the blur appears to be.
Recently i bought an OSSC Add-on board and right now Iām using it as standalone transcoder unit. Hooked up Panasonic 3DO FZ-10 to S-Video cable and the result is phenomenal. It works GREAT! Especially if your CRT TV doesnāt have S-Video.
as a fellow 32" D-Series owner, Iām curiousā¦what do you have your sharpness (detail) set at? I find that the default midway point seems too sharp on component/RGB
Actually right now Iām using Samsung Tantus Flat 15" CS15k8mjq (i never had D-series JVCās). Sharpness at 50% in menu, brightness at 19, color - 36, contrast - 3. Also i tweaked focus on fly back transformer (this is only for experienced users) with 240p test suite.
yeah my bad, I meant to reply to @raskulous . looks great though!
Here you go. I keep it at the bottom because it only seems to make edges standout artificially. If you look at the sharpness pattern on the 240p test suite, the higher it is, the worse it looks.
Thatās my experience anyway.
perfect, thanksā¦I thought as much! Iāll give the test suite a look
I found from a quick test that video content looks a bit better sharper though, so Iāll be flipping back and forth I imagine
Yeah I have a VCR but no tapes, so itās not hooked up. I never watch video content on this set unless itās FMV in a game.
