So I lost my Sonic CD save due to the battery in my Mega CD going flat (I have the Japanese version and apparently you have to manually transfer saves to the RAM cart?) anyway I decided to play some Sonic 1 while I order a new battery.

Sonic 1 is very underrated. I think that in many ways it is the most satisfying and balanced of all the Sonic games from a difficulty and pacing perspective.

It was also quite a looker back in the day being the first game to become a true 16-bit phenomenon in North American stores. I have memories of it blowing my mind as a young kid.

My favorite too, I think it has the SEGA arcade quality in many ways (that you describe too).

Agreed. It definitely feels like an arcade game more than other Sonic games on the system.

It’s funny you say that because those have been my exact thoughts while I play through it. It definitely has an arcade-like feel to it and some of the level design is actually quite difficult (at least when compared to later games in the series)

Awesome shots! That’s a good one! I have a green Japanese board but haven’t been able to track down a blue north american one yet.

The sprite and portrait work in SoR/BK3 are some of the best of the era. Regardless of system. Love the shots.

More Sonic on my MD VA1 via RGB on a PVM20L2.

For the first time ever I actually bothered to get all of the chaos emeralds - I’ll admit I cheated somewhat and used save states between bonus stages so I could always retry. That said they’re putrid horrible stages so I feel no guilt whatsoever.

I’m slowly making my way through the game and I’ve really been enjoying it - I always skipped over it because 2 is my favourite (and the one I played first) but I’ve been loving it so far.
