Sega Dreamcast |OT| It's Still Thinking

Edited.

Look to me to be: brown, black, black, red, brown

Do you have a multimeter?

Depending on the direction, those colours would be 10k or 120

https://www.digikey.ca/en/resources/conversion-calculators/conversion-calculator-resistor-color-code

My guess is 120… I tried installing a 10k into mine initially, and it stopped the fan entirely.

I’ll dig out my multimeter. Likely tomorrow.

Some reading shows 10K is the recommended resistor.

Yeah yours is definitely a 10k. The grouped bands on the left side there are where you read from.

I checked mine with the dB meter app on iOS and it was about 20dB as well (no resistor, mic right under the grill).

This is all very interesting. @matt when I installed my Noctua fan I wasn’t that impressed with the level of noise either, I’m curious now about the resistor, I don’t think mine has one. I will check tomorrow. One thing is for sure I will never buy another, imo it’s only slightly quieter. I will download a sound app and measure it and share my result.

I wonder if the stock fans have varying part numbers or wear differently. My DC was used and the fan change was immediately noticeable. Maybe it was used or abused whereas some not noticing a difference have stock fans that are still in good condition. Just speculating here

I wish I’d have read that it wasn’t much quieter before spending Ā£50! Everything I read said silent, whisper quiet etc. Literally nobody said what we are saying now.

Ā£50!! Fuck. Hahaha.

Good point dubc. I’ll measure my original fan tomorrow. Just for peace of mind!

Thing is, even if it’s not quieter, you’re dealing with a larger fan. That means more airflow at worst case scenario.

It also means you can slow it down significantly, and still get the same as stock airflow.

My stock fan for reference:

Looks like about 3.8cfm and 27dB @ 10500 rpm.

https://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20Sheets/NMB-MAT/1204kl.pdf

By contrast, the noctua is 4.8cfm and 17.9 dB @ 4500 rpm.

In short: the noctua is a big upgrade.

Hey Matt, just curious, where did you buy from?? That’s crazy pricing.

The guy that created the 3d print sells the 3d printed parts for $10 USD, then you can buy the fan on your own.

https://laserbear.net/shop/ols/products/dreamcast-noctua-fan-mount-kit

I was lucky to have a friend that has a printer, so I got that for free. The fan was $18 CAD on amazon.

Laserbear didn’t ship to UK when I checked.

I bought my fan kit from a UK eBay seller. Just checked and it was actually £43, with bracket and cable and replacement power switch, and was the cheapest I could find at the time. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/124359451238

My original fan measures 30dB, in the Dreamcast. So noticeably louder, and whinier.

Can’t find my multimeter right now.

Breakthrough!

I noticed when putting the lid on that it increases the noise levels due to echo in the now much emptier shell. Quick measurements showed somewhere around 3dB.

So I put some plastic board along the edge of the GDEMU effectively halving the inside space whilst creating a direct passage from the fan directly to the PSU.

This idea isn’t mine, it was something I’d seen/read that came back to me when I heard the noise increase as I put on the lid. I believe it’s done for air flow reasons but I did it for echo noise reduction reasons.

New fan noise measurement <20dB

Will report back.

That’s a great idea… I should look into getting my friend to 3D print one for me.

I’ve heard that removing the 12v line when you’re running a GDEMU helps, but I went with the USBGDROM instead. I wonder if it would still work without 12v.

I’m going to send a message to the seller and see what he thinks.

I love GDEMU!

How are the Dreamcast ports of 240p arcade games like Garou, Mars Matrix and Gigawing? I think the original resolution for the latter too was 306 x 224, and the list of 240p-supported Dreamcast games looks very slim.

Does this mean a lot of 240p-derived ports run with some sort of upscaling/pixel doubling + softening filter?

If that really is the case I’ll probably reconsider a few planned purchases. Wasn’t pleased with the results of PS2 titles like Taito Memories and Street Fighter III: The Third Strike (thankfully the DC version lets you output 240p!)

Depends how you run them.

I think they all run proper 240p over SCART.

Bangai-O is defo 240p and it won’t run through the VGA box.

Garou, Mars Matrix, GigaWing will upscale to 640x480 over VGA.

Mars Matrix is brilliant, especially 2P.

Guess I need to bite the bullet and get RGB cables. Garou in 240p would be brilliant not to mention Third Strike. Can’t get it to boot in 240p over VGA.
