Sega Dreamcast |OT| It's Still Thinking

Thanks for the list! I never got round to getting a VGA cable anyway, though it doesn’t seem clear that all games will output 240p via SCART or S-Video? Garou is in the 640 x 480 list, but I reckon that’s true for all video output solutions, not just VGA?

Many of the games require an input combination during boot up, typically Start + A/B to activate 240p mode.

Gigawing has a huge amount of input lag, it really feels awful. Haven’t played it myself but Garou apparently has audio lag and a few timing differences in combos, accounts of the latter vary though. Mars Matrix is a great port.

Gigawing and Mars Matrix were 384x224.

Cheers! It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a good look at the Dreamcast library so I appreciate this. I might hold off and see if Mars Matrix makes its way to Capcom Arcade Stadium first I suppose.

Are there any other great arcade ports to look out for? Cosmic Smash looks cool, reminds me of Space Squash on Virtual Boy.

Cosmic Smash is awesome, lovely packaging, I kinda regret selling that one. I have particular fondness for Under Defeat, Border Down, Zero Gunner 2, Karous, Ikaruga and Cannon Spike on the shooter side and Guilty Gear X, Dead or Alive 2, Powerstone 1+2, Capcom Vs SNK 1+2 and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for fighters. 18 Wheeler is goofy fun, Outtrigger is interesting, F355 challenge has the best rawk soundtrack ever and the Virtua Tennis games are still fantastic. Whilst some of those are available on other platforms they just feel right on Dreamcast hardware somehow.

Really you can’t go wrong with any of the Naomi ports, the only one that seems to have any issues is Crazy Taxi, running too slow and lagging compared to the original.

If you own a Dreamcast and haven’t played L.O.L yet…do it today! Seriously its an awesome game and unlike anything else out there

Has anyone counted the exact number of frames on Dreamcast Giga Wing? I’m wondering if it would still be better than the Capcom Arcade Stadium version.

As far as I remember, it’s 60fps. No idea if frames of animation are missing or anything though. Also can’t remember what resolution it ran at.

I meant frames of input lag.

It’s been on my list since I finished Moon and Tingle RPG, that and UFO: Day in the Life!

Interesting, I played Crazy Taxi back in the day but not the arcade game, I guess I’ll keep it that way to preserve the memories…

Forgot about 18 Wheeler, and Outtrigger looks more interesting than Ghost Squad which I found a bit dull. Thanks for the recommendations, particularly 18 Wheeler which I forgot existed. Had a blast with King of Route '66 so anything like that is going to be good fun.

Had a google and it’s 7 frames in both the Dreamcast port and Capcom Arcade Stadium if the measurements are accurate. 3 of those frames come from the game itself, I measured that with frame advance in MAME which feels far more responsive then my memories from owning the Dreamcast version. So your input is shown on the fourth frame on real hardware which is a pretty common amount for the time, surprised the port added as much as it does.

See 1.01.31…

Now the majority of big SNES RPG’s have been translated I really hope we start to see all these amazing PS1 games get the same treatment.

Okay, this is probably a longshot, but maybe someone here has experienced something similar.

My Dreamcast won’t boot.

It boots up, gets to the date/time entry screen, then the screen goes black. Sometimes it sits on the time/date screen for only 1/2 a second, other times about 5 seconds. It seems to be random.

I have a USB-GDROM, but if I unplug that and install the stock GD-ROM drive, it doesn’t even make it to the boot screen.

I’m thinking it’s got to be a power issue of some sort, but I really don’t know for certain.

Any thoughts?

so it looks like someone found Castlevania Resurrection? Lets hope they like to dump things haha

or it’s a late april fools joke

fuck, that’s so cool. always wondered how much (if anything) got done there, video looks like maybe more alpha than beta? still, music and assets are there, i’d love to wander around and have the game freeze a lot, haha. shit this is co cool!!

Measure the voltage at the pins that the PSU plugs onto. Then if Ok, try removing the PSU from the pins & clean them, carefully push the PSU sockets back onto the pins and off/on again a few times. It could just be oxidation on the pins. Also check that they are all straight. Some people bend them slightly toward the sockets but I personally don’t like the idea of doing that.

I always had my doubts about DC Castlevania being any good but it would cool to try the prototype.

I measured and all three voltages are good at the pins, which means they are making good contact with the PSU. Everything looks clean and oxidisation free.

I was debating getting a new PSU at one point, but I really don’t think that’s the issue.

Ok good you have the correct voltages. Now the on/off x 3 method I mentioned, it may still fix it. The voltage check was just to confirm correct output from the PSU. You could still have too much resistance between the pin & socket.
Also the capacitor on the right in you photo looks a little expanded on the top of the cap, maybe ?

Between troubleshooting, installing the fan mod, as well as the battery mod, I’ve had this thing completely apart 10x at least, so I don’t think taking the PSU out again will change anything for me unfortunately.

Okay, I think I actually found my issue!

C10 and C3 weren’t measuring correctly with the multimeter, so I removed them from the board, just to make sure that measuring them in-line wasn’t causing an issue. Turns out C3 was leaking, and both C3 and C10 are no good.

I’ll order a full cap replacement for the board I think, then go from there.
