Sega Dreamcast |OT| It's Still Thinking

What is the model on the battery itself?

That console is not currently modded to remove recharging capabilities, so the battery in there should be an ML2020 or ML2032, which are both rechargeable coin cell batteries…

Anything other than those two would not be recommended.

If you want to read about the process of removing the charging capabilities so you can use a normal old CR2032, you can check out my post about it here: Sega Dreamcast Battery Mod – He Who Retro Gamed

What is your dB measurement? My noctua still annoys me.

Shoot, it’s just a panasonic CR2032. Thanks dude, that’s a great guide. Yeah, definitely no diode on mine. I just ordered an ML2032 for now.

Another weird thing is it had an intact tamper-evidence sticker with a 7 digit number over the screw hole under the modem, like it had never been opened before. I dunno if Dreamcasts came with that from the factory. Either the previous modder stuck it on there for some reason, or carefully used an exacto knife to replace it cleanly. I just tore through it.

@matt I don’t have a special meter or anything but I set my phone beside my dreamcast with some random app I just downloaded and measured 47db average room noise / 53db with Dreamcast on. So ~6db, or thereabouts?

Curious! What fan and resistor are fitted on your DC?

My noctua fan was rated at 17.9dB and I measured 20dB. At these measurements it was a waste of money for me. Even though it is quieter than original I can still hear it easily.

Huh! I wonder…I’m not a stranger to playing the fan lottery; I remember getting the short end of the stick with my PS4 Pro.

But we gotta just be seeing differences in phone placement / mic sensitivity or some other variable here. I downloaded the same app you used, db Meter, and got 47db average, 51db with fan on, with my phone on the desk and its mic directly under the fan.

Then I held my phone up to the fan grille with its mic pointed directly into the fan and got an average of 66db. That can’t be an accurate reading because the air was blowing directly onto the mic but yeah…

I got the Noctua fan on amazon

And the kit from Laserbear. It says 10k resistor.

Yeah, that 10K ohm resistor bridges the 5V line and the signal line, or the dreamcast will no longer boot.

@matt you can also in stall another resistor on the 5V line itself to lower the speed of the fan. Somewhere from a 16ohm to a 50ohm should do the trick, depending on your preference.

@matt sounds same as your video :man_shrugging:

Maybe the problem is my brain! :joy:

Here’s mine with just the 10k resistor, and no other modification to fan speed.

Yeah that difference in volume and pitch between the stock and Noctua fans is similar to my experience.

This is now the Dreamcast boot-up and fan-noise ASMR thread.

I just replaced the CR battery that the previous owner had in there with an ML so I think I’m done. I guess I’m lucky it didn’t pop or anything. I’m pretty sure every mod I was interested in is installed now until all the CRTs in the world die and I have to go digital.

Gonna play Quake III for a while and hopefully it holds a charge.

My DC battery no longer saves time and date for more than 1-2 days, going to have to find a way to get it fixed and replaced. I don’t have any soldering skills but I have a friend who could probably do the install for me.

I got a new Hyperkin HDMI DC cable yesterday for $30 at a local used game shop, have to say so far that VGA compatible games look incredibly nice displaying games in VGA mode on my 1080p Plasma. Until now I was using s-video, part of the reason I got it was because I might be bringing my Dreamcast to a friend’s house for some old school multiplayer on Zero Gunner 2, Cannon Spike and some other titles and don’t want the games to look unbearably awful on his 4K TV. Only issue I’ve discovered so far is after tricking the system to boot Gunbird 2 into VGA mode with my trusty DC-X import disc, yikes, that game gets riddled with a ton of terrible slowdown. But that’s not an issue with the cable itself and is specific to the game based on what I’ve read. Will try a few other non-VGA games like Mars Matrix and Giga Wing 1 to see how they fare as well.

same question here - i need to readjust the pots on my DC, but at this point, i’m interested in any SD options that don’t gut the drive/require internal modding. any ones out there y’all recommend?

Gigawing supports VGA.

These are ODE are optical drive emulators, so they need the connections the drive is plugged into. At that point the original drive is no longer connected and thus dead weight.

I’ve not heard of any way to have them both plugged in at the same time.

hmm…what’s compatibility like? might hold out for another option, but it’s good to know

Compatibility of discs great no problem.

I run solely on VGA which narrows the games I can play.

The MODE has an auto-VGA patch which means it’s compatible with pretty much every game bar 3 or so

GDEMU has that too

I think there are more than 3 that don’t work with it!

The only game that 100% refused to play with VGA with my GDEMU was KOF98.

Most of the incompatible games works with issues.
