Sega Genesis/Mega Drive |OT| WELCOME TO THE NEXT TOPIC

Ha, thanks! Also, why is the sync line yellow in my head? Like, for some reason I think that is the color it is supposed to be.

Oh same! I think it’s because of the composite RCA video cables but I’ve never really thought why

That totally makes sense. I bet that’s it!

Yeah, I definitely want to get one of those for that reason. It would at least give me reason to sell mine some day. I don’t think I ever bought it on Virtual Console.

So, how much difference does the triple bypass actually make? I find the RGB output of the Genesis Model 1 to be pretty awesome as it is, but I’m also playing on a consumer set.

Do you need a PVM to really see the difference? Have any before/after shots?

I think the biggest gains on a model 1 are signal clean up. I haven’t done before/after shots but I noticed a fair amount of interference when running my model 1 through a Framemeister. It was mainly noticeable in areas of flat blue. This should clean that right up. I didn’t have bad jail bars to begin with. I haven’t hooked it back up to my OLED but I’ll report back when I do.

On my VA 6.5 the audio was already quite good.

There is the added benefit of both consoles using the same cable now.

This was a fun project and something I wanted to do to learn more soldering skills but it isn’t something I’d consider necessary unless you just want to know you are getting the best cleanest analogue signal you can.

On a BVM/PVM I don’t see any interference at all.

Interesting. I haven’t noticed any interference issues with my genesis, so I guess I shouldn’t worry about it.

Awesome! When you scale your video up 6x you also scale the noise up 6x. I think scaling is where you get the most bang for your buck with this mod. Playing at native Rez is a different ballgame. Although I did notice noise/ghosting on my SNES on a BVM before I modded it.

We have the same CRT. What’s the model number?

edit: just noticed i replied to a super old post lol.

Random thought: I wish the EA Sports NHL games had a TATE mode.

Oooh, we should totally get @Laevateinn to help us hack it up. Such a good idea.

Would that even be possible? I imagine the screen scrolling is tied to the gameplay logic and sprite behavior.

I agree it’s a really cool idea though! It would be cool for Madden too.

Yeah I think it wouldn’t be possible unless it was designed ground up to be able to do it.

I guess I’ll need to pickup a Lynx if I want TATE football (game looks terrible lol).

So despite having much more pressing matters to attend to - I decided to take the afternoon for myself and recap my VA1 Mega Drive. It’s been working fine, but as a pretty early model it was weighing on my mind that I’d eventually need to jump in and do a little nip and tuck.

I picked up the cap kit from console5 about 18 months ago. It wasn’t until I opened it up I realised just how many damn caps there are in this thing.

A bit dusty inside but no nasty surprises - all of the caps looked to be in good condition with no leaking or bulging.

This took me a couple of hours - but I’m still learning so I was taking it extremely slow. The only frustrating parts were stubborn vias near plastic components - it’s really difficult to get in there and clean them up without doing damage. In hindsight I should have masked some things off with kapton tape to give me a little more freedom of movement.

Anywho - I’m really pleased with the result and an unexpected bonus is quite a jump in audio quality. The stereo separation is much more noticeable now. I imagine the caps around the headphone jack were getting a little tired. The video output is also brighter - I usually have to adjust my PVM slightly for MD games but replacing those caps looks to have punched it up ever so slightly.

Somehow I didn’t see this post earlier. Great job!

Just wanted to share my first Genesis 2 region mod. I have a board with a stuck right direction on player two that I use for experimenting. This was the result. It’ll now switch between Japan and NA at the flick of a switch! I really like the look of these LED rocker switches. They match the color and look well especially after putting in a blue LED for the power indicator.

If you look closely you can see that it says “miles” instead of tails in Sonic 2 indicating it is in the Japanese region.

Finally got around to fixing a Sega cd model 2 I’ve had lying around for months. All it needed was a good cleaning and a new fuse. Replacing a fuse was a bit of a pain in the ass since all my soldering equipment is in storage. Only had access to some solder and a cheap soldering iron I bought from Walmart.

I was afraid the lens might be busted, but it works great. Tested it with both burned and official games.

I forgot how much I loved 90s anime art style.

Was just using Lunar to test the system and ended up playing for several hours. Also the intro to snatcher is phenomenal. Would love a remake of this game.
