That’s a bummer. I thought changing the system language to Japanese fixed it?
I believe it’s an issue with the bios that can’t be got around with the selected language.
I remember the Saturn version having less slowdown but that probably wouldn’t be enough reason to buy the game again unless you really want to own both versions.
I played the game once. It was pretty cool. It’s a vertical shmup with no TATE mode so it actually feels different than what I’m used to.
There’s less vertical space on the screen so you have to react faster, but there’s also more room side to side to dodge. So it creates a different dynamic.
It felt good to play. I remember threading the ship through bullet hell even on my first run and feeling like a badass (before getting crushed).
Bought for a friend via Craigslist. Turns out that I loved the color and overall feel of that model (also have the superior JP boot sequence)…
…Maybe I should keep it.
It’s getting harder and harder to find one that doesn’t need some Retrobrite.
That’s how I remember it, but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, I no longer have a US model to test it on, so @Teknoman might want to give it a shot anyway.
I’m after a Saturn. To play some T&E SOFT golf games. Newbie alert.
Yes😁 far better game. See my Battle of the Ports video on it.
Get The Hyper Golf: Devil’s Course (AKA Valora Valley Golf). It’s a fantasy-themed golf game that runs in the the Pebble Beach Golf Links engine. You can also use superpowers!
It’s on my list, as are all the T&E SOFT golf games. I’ve got the original PC-98 and later Mega Drive versions of Devil’s Course. The Saturn version would compete the trilogy.
Oh, and there’s a 3DO version that uses the same assets as the Saturn version but does screen updates like the Mega Drive version.
There’s also a super Famicom version of devil’s course.
Good point.
The SFC game is the same course as the MD version, but the game user interface isn’t as refined so I don’t really play it. The MD games in the series are just so damned stylish. Though the final two SFC games, Pebble Beach NEW and Masters NEW are insane: very accomplished and they use the SA-1 chip to do some fancy rendering, easily giving the PlayStation and 3DO titles a run for their money.
Back to Saturn, the game I really want to play is Waialae no Kiseki & 36 Extra Holes (1997), in which T&E reprise one of the original PC-98 course add-ons “Eight Lakes G.C.” (1990). It’s fascinating to see the same course rendered a graphics generation or two later. They also throw in a new fictional course “Windy G.C.” with really high wind speeds.
I don’t have a good enough computer to play my Saturn games at full speed through emulation.
Eight Lakes G.C. (Saturn)

Eight Lakes G.C. (PC-98, using later version of main game)

Eight Lakes G.C. (PC-98, using first version of main game)

I own all of the Saturn golf games. I really like the T&E soft titles however the later two of the SFC impress me the most. It’s just cool seeing those games on a mainly 2D system.
I played Saturn Waialae no Kiseki: 36 Extra Holes tonight using Beetle/RetroArch and my official Saturn USB controller.
I was shocked to see this engine is closer to the last two SNES games than any of the PlayStation games. Unexpected!
Saturn Waialae has an option for “high definition rendering” (enabled by default). Is that common for Saturn games? I didn’t notice any major difference in speed with it on/off, but then I’m not playing on real hardware at the moment.
Also, really awkward controller layout. Right Trigger as action button?!?
I can’t remember as it’s been a long time since I played them.
Great photo
I still have more Japanese Saturn games than US ones.
That’s the smart thing to do.
