I see, maybe a break in the wire somewhere?
Only thing I can think of is the wire itself is ridiculously long, and I wrap it around the controller
Time for an ODE!
Kenji Tosaki, peripheral development manager at Sega in the Saturn/Dreamcast era did a Q&A on a Sega Facebook page I follow recently.
Regarding why the Dreamcast had only four face buttons:
Nice to have some insight on why Sega switched to four face buttons. I always assumed it was to make the DC controller less cramped or avoid awkward placement angles because of the VMU. It would have been nice if someone would have asked about some of the other puzzling design choices with that controller. Why totally overhaul the d-pad when the Saturn d-pad was already so good? Why make the analog stick a thumb-shredder?
I can still ask more questions maybe…
We already have some info on some of that stuff from magazines a long time ago
It was marketing, they were trying to ape competitors as much as possible for familiarity and user testing showed they didn’t understand the value of the floating dpad, and users fingers got ‘lost’ with six face buttons as there isn’t an obvious feeling ‘home’ button like on the diamond format.
OST slaps. i’d kill for a vinyl
Load games through the controller port!?
That’s very cool, screws you over for two player games though!
Surly games would load very slowly via the controller port?
Just get a Saitator. No drive replacement, no taking apart the console and no loss of player 2 or the need to rely on another cart plugged in to the ultra shitty Saturn cartridge slot.
I have a Fenrir personally, it’s a lot cheaper and it was very easy to plug in.
I read that they’re working towards 1x CD speed.
Radiant Silvergun launching on Switch today!
That’s pretty slow for a Saturn
Got the urge to play my Saturn. My Japanese Saturn’s disc drive is dead and my American Saturn seems to be having trouble reading discs. Are there any good replacement lasers out there.
not completely on topic…
I’m sure I’m lttp on this, but if you’re a Saturn fan, or Sega in general, check out Uncle from Another World (Isekai Ojisan) on Netflix (US). It’s pretty funny, a lot of Sega gaming references.
I’ve updated the original post with links to the NiGHTS datamining repository, the High Context Burning Rangers fansite, the Sega Saturn Shiro blog and YouTube channel, and the PandaMonium Reviews YouTube channel. I’ve also updated the link for SSF to reflect its current home on github.
I’ve updated the original post again with links to Meduza Team’s site which hosts various improvement patches and Emerald Nova’s site which has an archive of many recent Saturn homebrew titles. I’ve also updated the link for widescreen patches that were hosted on the now-defunct Assembler Games forum. It now directs to an archived version of that forum post.
Hey, just noticed you have my old site, Segagaga Domain in there. I still have all the original files you know
Your site was an invaluable resource when I started collecting imports in the mid-to-late aughts, Mark. The mini reviews made it easy to separate the wheat from the chaff in the Japanese catalog… or to identify the unique bits of chaff (I do like me some kusoge/shovelware on occasion, heh).
