Sega Saturn |OT| - Playin' Saturn each day keeps Segata away!

I always plan on making a book but time is always against me.

I can’t think of anyone in the English-speaking world who’s better qualified to tackle a book like that. You’ve literally played every game on the system. Also helps that your tastes are rather good. The only thing you’d have to do is clean up and expand on your original reviews a bit.

I’ve added several more links. ā€œSaturn Mods Wikiā€ is listed under the repositories section, the ā€œFenrirā€ and ā€œMODEā€ websites are under boot devices, and archived links to ā€œScoreAttack.netā€ and its successor site ā€œNiDscores.comā€ can be found under the fansites tab.

Let me know if you guys can think of any more useful Saturn-related websites (past or present), and I’ll add them.

Well, I was on disc 3 of Panzer Dragoon Saga when my Saturn battery died wiping out all my saves. I had recently tried backing up my saves to my RAM cart which I’ve done before but couldn’t get it to work this time after many attempts to get the system’s notoriously dodgy RAM slot to cooperate. That, plus forgetting to change the battery in time and well, here I am. My old region switch modded Saturn is over 23 years old (since I had it modded) and still seems to work great otherwise but I’m beyond done with this console’s absolutely awful save system. I was looking into getting an FRAM modded Saturn, I saw this one on eBay which is also region free and uses the Hi-Saturn bios and boot sequence. The seller said the FRAM chip holds 461 blocks of memory, not sure if that is the standard:

I’d greatly appreciate any opinions or advice if the source above looks good or if there are better places to get these from. I can’t do the mod myself.

I feel your pain. Because he Saturn RAM expansion slot is so poor I use he Saturn disc unit to back up all my saves periodically.
These are rare and expensive bits of kit though, however offer limitless save data.

What’s your opinion of that modded unit from
eBay I posted above? Decent option or maybe sketchy?

What ram carts are you guys using? I’ve been using an action replay device and have never had an issue. It is the one that supports both 1mb and 4mb titles but also is useful for booting games outside your region.

I have a feeling this is a rare sort of circumstance where first party stuff is less reliable than the third party solutions out there.

I even remove it regularly to boot the Satiator and reinsert it after loading a game and it just works without any errors.

If you are using official ram, maybe try switching to action replay?

I have a plain white import memory cart (assume it’s the the official one) and it’s always been extremely dodgy. Thanks for the info on the action replay carts, didn’t realize they had such a good success rate.

I use those red Pseudosaturn carts that have the onboard memory as well. I forgot how to access the memory but I’m pretty sure it’s full now

Think I will get an Action Replay now per your reply:

If this is a good option as a memory card I might just forgo getting an FRAM modded system for now.

This is the one I use:

There may be no difference, but it’s a slightly different box and label.

Well, just ordered an Action Replay off Amazon, got free shipping.

I have to say, last night I was playing Ys 1&2 on my Turbo Duo and its capacitor-charged memory (right?) save system is so simple, generally reliable and elegant for the time, why couldn’t Sega have done something similar with Saturn? As long as you turn your Duo on once a month (if even that) your saves are golden. Have some shmup high shores on my Duo from at least 6 months ago which were all still there too. Might get a Tenokoe bank at some point though.

I’m afraid I don’t know much about these mods.

I’ve just learned that there’s a more recent cart that works the same as the action replay one but also allows you to play backups.

I don’t need it since I have the satiator but it could be helpful to some people, especially for playing hacks and translation patches:

they’re kind of finicky. I’ve had to put electrical tape in mine because some games don’t work because of emp interference or something like that. but for 40/50 bucks they’re super useful, been using it for years now

I found these carts to be much more convenient than the AR+ given that it acts as an actual memory card with in-game saves rather than just a memory backup. I believe they can be found for slightly cheaper on ebay or Aliexpress.

Oh I didn’t even realize you could save in game to a memory card. I always backed up after resetting when done playing. Is that a feature supported in all Saturn games or only select titles? I may upgrade if it’s universally supported.

It truly is a bizarre system in some ways.
