Super Mario Bros 35th Anniversary Direct

Not for analogue stick I don’t think. Which the C-buttons are mapped to

Not sure about 64’s ‘close up’ camera which had the Y-axis controls, but presumably they’ve changed because they have been changed in Sunshine.

So in the original version of Sunshine you could either aim Fludd by holding down R while standing still, giving you Y-Axis controls, or zoom the camera in to a behind-the-shoulder view, which also let you move the Y-Axis for aiming.

This has been changed in the rerelease. Before, pulling the stick back (down) moved Fludd’s aim up, but now it does the opposite, so stick down = aim down.

Shindou version is the one that was released later in Japan only with some fixes/changes.

As for the camera, I’m seeing people say you can change it back to inverted. Looking into it more.

Reviews embargo just got lifted, hopefully we can find out about 64, but one review states you cannot swap the camera controls in Sunshine back to their originals.

Looks like a few people were talking out of their ass, and yeah, no option for switching camera controls. Works for me since I wanted non inverted, but I understand that is a major preference thing. On top of it being an actual story thing.

Yeah, it’s baffling that there’s no option to keep it as it was originally designed back then, especially as they’ve chosen to present the games as history pieces using emulation (the title screen copyrights are even untouched).

Well, I’ll be giving them a try for sure as I have a pre-ordered copy arriving this weekend. But I might not be able to play Sunshine if that is the case. (I’ve actually never played more than about 10 minutes of that game, so was looking forward to trying it.) But non-inverted controls are pretty touch for me to deal with. It’s why I could not finish Beyond Good & Evil. That game has also be re-released a couple of times and STILL no option to change.

I’ve heard the SN30 Pro+ (or whatever the latest version of that controller is called) give an option to customize button inputs. Might be a fix. I have the Pro but not the latest version.

I wasn’t able to cancel my order so I’m still getting this - to be honest I’m still excited about it even though there are some changes that I don’t approve of.

Digital Foundry’s review is on point, I’m glad John pointed out some of the main differences in Super Mario 64, given it’s been rendered with Nintendo’s high level emulation: The lack of three point texture filtering messing a bit with the original texturework, the lack of AA, the audio delay, and the increased resolution showing up LODs designed for 240p.

Regarding the camera inversion issues, shouldn’t it be possible to fix that somehow by reconfiguring the right control stick directions under the Switch system-wide button remapping menu? (which allows for multiple presets)

You can’t configure each direction independently unfortunately, you can only rotate all directions 45 degrees to match horizontal (or vertical) Joy-Con orientation.

I guess even if you could it does present an issue on the Y-Axis, presumably C-Down in Sunshine still zooms the camera out, with C-Up zooming in. But the aiming controls with Fludd have changed on both the left and right sticks, so fixing that would cause issues with the camera and character movement.

Yikes, that’s awful, how on earth does something like that pass quality control? Hopefully they patch it at some point.

I think the audio delay is my only gripe so far.

It’s really noticeable on the title screen and when entering star select and the beginning of each level.

My copy should arrive today. Not sure I’ll have much time to play until the weekend though.

Fortunately as it turns out, the camera changes don’t bother me, thankfully.

Have started files on all three games, really enjoying the collection so far. I’m having fun re-discovering Sunshine even though it’s still pretty mixed, quality wise. 64 and Galaxy are both timeless and as fun as ever.

Forgot to mention my copy arrived too. It’s fine, I can live with the third person camera changes but I prefer controlling Lakitu instead of the view directly. I spent most of the hour I played on Sunshine though, which looks amazing on the Switch’s display, even if the upscaled cutscenes look messy by comparison.

I was disappointed that the front-end was so sloppy, though. The FMV video in the background isn’t even properly frame-paced, and the text is blurry. According to game files the project began in February, so they can’t have had much time to put something good together - what we did get in the few months before the game went gold for production is impressive.

It makes me wonder if the idea for this game came from NCL’s marketing/sales teams and there weren’t any resources at Nintendo EPD to take it on, so it was passed off to NERD. Nintendo did, after all, fully rebuild Luigi’s Mansion for 3DS with Grezzo, a far less significant game, and even Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga saw a full remake on 3DS. Zelda gets better treatment as well, and I think all of those ports would have been devised years in advance to fill release schedules rather than tie in with a marketing celebration.

Could have been related to the pandemic as well. Maybe they weren’t going to play up Mario’s 35th as much until they realized distancing would affect their teams’ abilities to create or finish new content this year. Solution: toss some classic Mario out there.

And with NCL disrupted more heavily than most the team at NERD probably worked more independently than they’d have liked. It might explain the baffling decision to only change the camera controls with no option to revert to the originals. Really hope they patch it back in…

Not on the timeline website(?) but the Super Mario 35th Twitter account is celebrating 25 years since the launch of Mario Clash - great stuff!

Might dig out the Virtual Boy for a bash on this later.

Yeah VB, always a fun toy to drag out! Also I need to play it at least once a year, keeps the glued connectors alive…

I’m like considering returning my copy until they do.

Sunshine is honestly defective to me, and it was the one I was keen to replay :frowning:

Haha yeah, makes me sad that every time I do a Sunday Virtual Boy afternoon the ribbon cable problem seems to get worse from before.

Same here. I want to play Sunshine the most in the collection and it absolutely needs the original aiming and behind-the-shoulder controls. Game has been back in its case waiting for a patch since launch day…
