The official Retro Core / Battle of the Ports thread

It’s Booze Time!

Have you received the new Bittboy, with shoulder buttons, for review? The website says it’s open for preorder.

No, it yet. I’m waiting for them to send me one.

This week on Battle of the Ports we have a true classic that started life on the C64. It’s Turrican.

I only played Super Turrican of the games but I need to get into that series more.

Turrican 1 and 2 on Amiga are amazing. Pastiche of iconic games like Metroid, Super Mario Bros and some other arcade games, but with labyrinthine, well designed, inspired and atmospheric action levels, heart, « micro » vibes, that balance the amateur shooting gameplay.
For me the sequels miss the point and are by far less brilliant, but they are not Manfred Trenz games anymore, so it’s different.
In the pure action department, his Rendering Ranger R2 on SFC is something to try out.

Super Turrican is a great place to start (The SNES version). Maybe try Mega Turrican next.

I’ll be covering Turrican 2 next week along with the console hacks known as Universal Soldier.

Yesterday was a lovely Saturday. Not too hot and nice blue skies. Should have been a great day but… I had to go to the office to finish up some loose ends.

Join me as we ride the bike to the train station, see the city, take a look at one of those Pachinko places and end at a Japanese grave yard located in a residential area.

Filmed using a GoPro Hero 7 Black. The video was originally recorded at 2.7k at 60fps. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the same great quality to appear on YouTube.

Yeah, I’m planning on playing and getting into Mega Turrican one day.

Gaming headsets are quite expensive but there are budget options. Are they any good?

The original Turrican was a reasonable game but the second one really took home computer games in to the console level of quality. Well, at least on the Amiga and maybe Atari ST it did.

Here we go on another short journey around Japan. This time I show you how to buy a train ticket, ride the monorail and see how rice is grown.

Really cool. I love random videos about Japan especially in areas I’ve never been to.

One if not the first fully textured 3D fighters is finally on Battle of the Ports.

Funny enough, it’s also the 1st 3D fighting game I ever played!

I bet you were amazed when you played something better
Two new Life in japan videos today.

Down at the game store selling my son’s game. You actually get to hear me speaking Japanese in this video (Subtitled in English)

And the second video is of us getting a haircut down at the typical Japanese barber shop.

Haven’t seen the barber shop one yet but that Geo is pretty huge! Funnily enough I was thinking about selling my Mario Kart 8 Deluxe too (though in the UK) - I’m not a huge fan of the double item box mechanic which ruins the extremely careful balancing from the Wii U original. Your son made a good call, haha.

I remember playing Battle Arena Toshinden at a friend’s house on PS1 and having my mind blown. Perhaps it doesn’t hold up compared to the classic 3D fighters of the generation, but back then, it was insane to see such detailed 3D graphics animating that we’ll do early on.

Virtual Fighters, Tekkens, and Soul Blade are obviously better games, but BAT had just enough oomph to be memorable among early PlayStation titles.

An Awsome urban exploration video this week. So surprised to see what was around my area.
