I like Blazing Lazers quite a bit, and that was the Shmup Club game for last month. Once I’m done editing the podcast episode for it (hopefully this week) and get it online, I’ll post a link here. We had some really good discussion about the game.
Yeah, this is good news. Dodonpachi Maximum is a great game that I already own!
I need to rebuy that on iOS! Had it on Windows Phone 7 but Microsoft shut the store ages ago despite some apps being forwards compatible with newer OSes…
Did you pick up Aka to Blue? It’s bloody brilliant!
Got my Psikyo Shooting Library vol. 2 LE today.
Beautiful looking folder that holds both games.
Lots more full color flyers
And a full color design book
That looks nice! I already have all 3 Asia-region releases, and I’m planning on getting the NIS America versions, for the CD soundtracks (and hopefully updated game cards with the fixes they’ve added since the initial digital releases), but I dig the artbook and nice packaging and extras.
I got Episode 015 of Shoot the Core-cast online yesterday! Listen to Addicted and I yammer on about Blazing Lazers
It’s hard to believe but it’s already been a year since I started the Sunday Night Shmup thread!
For the one year anniversary I figure it’s only fitting to feature the very first shmup I ever played:

Super R-TYPE blew my mind when I played it as a 12 year old kid in ‘91 on a SNES store demo kiosk. It was also the most “serious” game I’d played to date having played mostly lighter themed games such as Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, ect. I’m currently playing my Wii VC copy of the game.

The gritty, beautifully detailed bio mechanical sci-fi visuals were mesmerizing and blowing up stuff up with the charge beam was so satisfying. Sure, now we look back on it as a slow down riddled port of R-TYPE II with a few exclusive levels but back then it was both a rush and a revelation, we all gotta get our start somehow. My family didn’t have a SNES yet so I tracked down a copy of R-TYPE on Gameboy and cut my teeth further on that. Around that same time I rented a copy of GB Nemesis and that was my introduction to Gradius.
Anyways, hope you’ve all enjoyed the thread so far and here’s to another year of Sunday Night Shmupping!
Super R-Type left me a bit cold, but I think that’s because I came from playing R-Type II a bunch at the local bowling alley, so the even slower paced SNES take on it, with no checkpoints, and changes to the levels, didn’t quite sit well with me. It’s one I need to go back to, though, and give it another try.
Tonight’s Sunday Night Shmups are Raiden II and its remixed brother Raiden DX. Been playing both this weekend off and on respectively on the Raiden Project and Raiden DX PS1 ports and I’m reminded of what an intensely unforgiving and difficult game Raiden II is. DX feels much more balanced and enjoyable.

The Raiden Project import manual has a helpful demonstration from Miclus the dragon on how to TATE your CRT properly. =)
Man I love the Raiden series. You should give Viper Phase 1 and Fire Barrel a try some time, very similar to the Raiden series.
I haven’t played Raiden DX yet, unfortunately, but I thought it was supposed to be harder than II. I guess I need to add that one to my list, and make sure I can score a copy.
I managed to squeeze in 2 shmups yesterday. I got the 1CC in Legendary Wings (NES) that I was trying for, and I put some more time into N2O: Nitrous Oxide, and got my highest score so far, and reached the stage 9 boss, so I felt pretty good about that
Playing a little Tengai; I like the overall theme and music. The character design is, uh, interesting…
They’re real… and they’re spectacular… scanlines.
I did a no death run of the arcade version of Salamander!
Congrats! What version?
Arcade version on PS4.
Nice, I either go for PS4 or the PCE version (my favorite Salamander port).
Ah, the PCE version is that good eh? It’s on the PC Engine Mini that’s coming out in March 2020 as well so I can try that version too.
I prefer it because the difficulty is a bit more balanced and as I’ve posted before, the title screen music & animation on the PCE port is top notch, pure aural bliss right here:
