Yes, Raiden II’s only console appearance has been The Raiden Project. Part of me wonders if we haven’t seen more ports of Raiden II because DX is the “Director’s Cut” of II in some ways.
I thought about doing the same, but I decided to hold off on a PS4 copy, JUST IN CASE we see a physical release here in the states of it. That way I won’t feel so wasteful about buying it again.
Yeah but even DX’s only release is on the OG Playstation no? I was just looking up Raiden Legacy (never picked it up because I heard bad things about it) and its just the first Raiden with the Fighters games. Which if I’m going to play any of the Raiden Fighters games it’ll be on 360.
They really act like II and DX don’t exist.
I considered that as well but decided to buy the Japanese release as it would have the largest player-base. If the PS4 version comes west ill buy it as well.
Yeah DX was only on PS1 in Japan (an early Hamster release), I imported it last year.
I forgot about Raiden Legacy on Steam/PC, but like you said that doesn’t have Raiden II and have heard it has garbage tier emulation.
Streaming some Battle Garegga Rev. 2016 that I just picked up recently. I suck but am learning.
Finally got my ESPRade LE boxset for Switch pre-ordered, went with the Amazon JP version for the exclusive Joker Jun cover art. Can’t wait to play the game in TATE mode with Flip Grip.
Tonight’s Sunday Night Shmup is In the Hunt recently released by Hamster for the ACA line. This is my first time with the game and I’m absolutely loving it.
In the Hunt is one of my favorites.
I just picked up IN THE HUNT from the eShop myself.
I was mildly surprised that I still have credit on the Japanese eShop.
Then again I forgot how big of a prepaid eStore Card I actually bought a while back.
Two juicy news items:
Darius Cozmic Collection Japanese version will be receiving an update which will add English support, more gadgets, new modes and three more games: Darius Plus PCE, Super Nova for SNES and Sagaia for Genesis:
Now for the BIG one. M2 announced at a joint event with TATSUJIN, the current Toaplan IP holder that they will be porting Toaplan’s games to home consoles (FINALLY!!) with the goal of eventually porting over their entire library! This is very exciting, been waiting years to hear this news! Can’t wait to play perfect ports of games like Tatsujin/Truxton and Kyoukyoku Tiger at home.
Edit: Added article from Silicon Era which adds a few more details:
Wow, that is outstanding!
Finally a full aspect ratio version of Grind Stormer?
Awesome news. Would love to have Batsugun on the Switch. The English Darius update is interesting as well. Looking forward to that.
I have to assume the new Console ports that are coming are only coming to the giant special edition version and not the regular edition?
I’m sure Grindstormer will eventually be one of them because according to the Silicon Era news article I added to my original post above there are only a few Toaplan titles M2 doesn’t plan on trying to port/and or doesn’t have the rights to which are a couple of trashy risqué mahjong games so no loss there. I got to play Grindstormer for the first time at a retro event earlier this year on a MAME cabinet loaded with shmups, killer game!
Not sure, but I’m guessing that’s probably how it will go since the only way to get any of the home ports on the JP release was through the LE.
Would be amazing to get ports of some Toaplan shmups that never saw a home release, like Dogyuun and Vimana, or games like OutZone and FixEight. Arcade versions of other games we got home ports for, but differ enough from their arcade counterparts would be great also, like Sky Shark, Fire Shark, Grindstormer/V-V, etc. Having Batsugun available again for less than a mint would also be fantastic.
Just a quick note to say that the Tiger-Heli episode of Shoot the Core-cast is out! I hope everyone will enjoy it. Let me know if you have any feedback, suggestions, critiques, etc. that we can use to improve the podcast. Thanks!

Tonight’s Sunday Night Shmup is Raiden V Director’s Cut on Switch.
I bought the physical edition back in late July and am picking it up again tonight. Really enjoying it, still trying to make sense of the “cheer” system and other scoring bits. I like the fact you have a shield system in this game instead of lives as a change of pace which helps cut down on frustration. Game really could have used a TATE mode of some kind and could do without the pointless side chatter from the “story” characters, otherwise it’s a fun modern sequel to the series and I can’t complain (aside from needing that classic Raiden collection though). And the toothpaste laser is still as satisfying as ever.
Raiden V = Coffee and Crystals.
I wish MOSS had optimized the Switch version better. They made some odd color choices in some levels, so bullets can be hard to see at times, and it just doesn’t run as smoothly as it should. I do like the Cheer system, though, and think it’s an interesting addition. If/when I go back to Raiden V, sadly, I’ll probably stick with the PS4 release.
