The Sunday Night Shmup thread

Cotton Reboot is coming out this month on the Switch. Going to be like $40 I think. I’m hoping to get that and ESP Ra De on the eShop. Would recommend the Cotton games on the Saturn but they’re silly expensive. If you’re okay with using the PSK, you can play so many good shmups. God I love the Saturn. Battle Garegga in particular kicks my ass but I love it.

Edit: Actually the Saturn Cotton games are going to be released on the Switch in a tribute collection!

Have you played Darius Gaiden? Its one of my favorites, I’d recommend the Saturn port on a crt.

You’re me haha. I’ve been getting into these bullet hell type shooters of late.

I’ve always loved classic shooters like Gradius. And I love the Treasure stuff.

Helps they are much more accessible now thanks to digital distribution.

Tried the Japanese version of Raiden ACA and it seems it defaults to only one life? I did a double take and made sure that I wasn’t accidentally selecting Caravan mode. Also own the import version of the Raiden Project and that starts you with three lives so wondering if this is maybe a bug Hamster needs to patch or did certain Japanese PCBs default this way?

Say, you know how people say Gradius Gaiden is bugged when you play it on a PS2, because stage 7 (the black hole) plays at half-speed?

Well at the very least the claim should be ammended to “some ps2 models”, because I just got the game today and that stage plays perfectly normally on my 79001 PS2 slim. I would assume that if some PS2 models have problems with the game, it would be the same ones that removed some BC chips and are known to have problem with specific titles - but that’s only my speculation.

So today’s game was Espgaluda II, which I foresee not leaving the cab anytime soon. Personal best is 100 million in the 360 port, but as good as that was slowdown isn’t 100% spot on specially when using advanced techniques like Kakusei Zesshikai, thus I have to learn the game again. Not that I’m complaining, this is my favorite shooting game ever.

Toaplan Arcade Garage was announced by M2 at the Senjin Aleste event, coming to Switch and PS4 on October 28th. Will include Tiger Heli, Kyukyouku Tiger and Get Star. There will also be a version containing the home console ports of the Tiger games and of course there will also be a super spendy BEEP edition in a PCB box, here is the trailer:

I have the PC Engine version, solid port but really hard since you only have a small handful of continues.

No continues for me, but I doubt I will ever clear it with a single credit. I sure can try and learn the game though.

Couple of good shmup pickups from my local Disc Replay tonight. Fast Striker was a steal at that price, and R-Type is minty fresh.

It even has the original Toys R Us receipt from 5/29/89 taped inside the case, definitely a nice surprise there.

Great find, that original receipt is really cool.

Along with music from other classic video game series such as Dragon Quest, music from Gradius was used during the opening parade ceremony of the Olympics in Japan, what a time to be alive:

Here is the track itself and the orchestral album it was taken from:

Played some Deathsmiles IIX tonight. Never really spent much time with this since it came out digitally on the NA XBLA store 10 years ago, tried my luck with Rosa almost cleared it full level 3 EX on my first try. I have an old record in my HDD, apparently I have 1 credit cleared this using Follett before, don’t remember if it was a full level 3 run though.

Remember arcade mode being harder, but display options for ir suck it won’t display in 4:3 without letterbox.

Anyways it’s a cool shooting game that gets a lot of hate for the god awful graphics and sometimes questionable design, but it plays great, has some nice music to boot.

Sorry I kinda fell out of the groove in this thread! I’ve been working on Project Starship X this month, and have unlocked the 3rd loop, so I’m currently grinding away at that. Space Texas can be difficult, and one iteration of stage 4 has a lot of switching back and forth between spaceship and crawler mode, which throws me off. It’s a pretty fun game overall, though.

I got lucky again tonight at my Mega Replay. Missed out on Raiden V initially, didn’t realize its already out of print with copies going for around 80 bucks nowadays.

Had a $10 off coupon to use, so I ended up getting a hell of a deal.
