Why would anyone play this? Aren’t video games meant to test our dexterity and wits, or let us experience epic and thrilling stories? Instead what we have here is a collection of games of chance, the allure of which escapes me. And even the card games are meant to be played with friends or competitors around a real table. What do you get out of playing an AI one on one?
Besides the rhetorical problem of “why does this game even exist?” is the execution of the game itself. It sucks. There’s no save functionality, so you have to rely on long passwords with a cumbersome entry system just to recover your money. How hard is it to implement a small password when the only thing you need to save is a single integer? This wouldn’t be as much of a problem if just getting any sort of pool of money to work with in the first place didn’t take 2 or 3 (or 10) false starts. I’m sure most people will shut the game off at this point
The single casino is also pretty barebones. You have a small casino floor to wander around with a scattering of tables and a few random NPCs (that do nothing), and a high rollers area you can eventually unlock. That’s it. That’s the whole game. You also have to sit down at each table just to figure out the minimum and maximum bets. They couldn’t have a frame pop up and tell you that information when you walk up to the table? Even the horse racing just reads results off to you, you don’t get to watch a fake race or anything. There’s no excitement to the game of any sort.
If you have to play a game like this on SNES… don’t. Play a real game instead. Or host a poker night with friends. But if you insist, play Vegas Stakes.
My parents bought this garbage for the Genesis because my sister wanted it. We could have done literally anything else with that money. Anything.
She didn’t even play it
Funny thing about Super Caesars Palace and Vegas Stakes on SNES, we sold a SHIT TON of those at Electronics Boutique back in ‘93. People loved those games. I think a lot of it had to do with how hard it was to gamble legally back then. Atlantic City and Vegas were where you had to go. People just wanted to play Blackjack, Roulette and Poker at home and that was how you did it.
Same with the handheld LCD Vegas games. People Ate. That. Shit. Up!
Only 'merica counts!
Looks like the perfect SNES mouse game for @Listai
this is a really great read
I really like that old school HTML look to the site too. very fitting of a list like this and takes me back
The perfect game for the maiden voyage of my SNES Mouse haha!
Glad to offer it up. I think the writer is a Resetera poster. It was in the SNES thread over there. I should PM him and point him to RGB…
was just reading his entry for Harvest Moon. it’s clear how much thought and emotion went into these writeups
Hey Dave, thanks for the recruitment, and for sharing my site. Looks like I have a lot of SNES posts in this thread to catch up on tonight
@matt @D.Lo
Dude! You know how long it took me to do just the US library? If my scope was expanded to include other regions, I’d still have another 10 years in front of me, trying to get through all of those untranslated pachinko games!
Also, I run the SNES subreddit, if anyone ever wants another place to chat this stuff. Not that there’s ever any actual discussion or substance over there
Understandable to skip Japan, but there are only ~50 total PAL releases not released in America.
And there are some excellent PAL-only or JP/PAL only games.
The Firemen, Parodius, Pop’n TwinBee, Rainbow Bell Adventures, Terranigma, Super Dropzone, Asterix, Micro Machines 2…
You have to forgive European (and Australian and New Zealand…) fans, we’re just too used to being ignored in US-centric media.
Yeah, I mean, I get it, it’s a nice idea. And I’ve played through Terranigma, The Firemen, Parodius, and Pop’n Twinbee (actually just did that one on the Switch). All very lovely games.
Maybe I can do a side project/ranking with those ones some day. But not anytime soon. Even 50 games is a hefty commitment. I’m not playing these things for 10 minutes apiece. I try my best to get a full completion, and for sports games that can be a major time-consuming drag.
It’s worth doing PAL releases if only for Winter Gold!
All NTSC-U is a commendable goal. I’m just a bitter PAL user and avid Japanese import gamer.
Glad I could point you to RGB! This place is great.
You’ve done a great job on your site. It’s totally appreciated. I’m too old to start a project like this, but it would be damn cool to do!
Just had a gander at SNES Rankings - very cool indeed! I’ve bookmarked for continuous reading. More interested in checking out the stinkers, there are a lot of SNES and Super Famicom games that I am still not familiar with, especially those made specifically for the North American market.
Oh, there’s plenty of those…
