What are you playing? (Modern Gaming Edition)

It’s absolutely incredible. I’ve put in about 50 hours and barely scratched the surface.

I’ve been playing Crimson Desert the last 4 or 5 weeks. It’s got some great moments but also some very annoying and obscure puzzle elements which I have no shame in admitting I’ve been using guides for in some cases.

At least I haven’t found any game breaking bugs as of yet.

I’m completely hooked on Marathon. It’s an incredibly detailed science fiction sandbox of a video game. There are so many ways you can approach it when you drop in and the in between is full of fun logistics decisions that directly affect your next run.

The sci-fi wrapper tho is just so brilliantly executed by Bungie. It’s exciting, haunting, and always memorable.

The aesthetics are amazing in that game. Was a fan of the original Marathon Trilogy having grown up in a Mac household so I had to check the new one out.

The original’s style always looked goofy to me and Halo was already a second attempt at it so I am totally cool with them going for something quite unrelated to the original.

It’s phenomenal. One of the most artistic games you can play right now. The new night map is truly dark which so few games even attempt, let alone get this right. When the storms are raging and the lightning hits and lights up everything… man.

Gameplay is where it’s at though, and it has that in spades. It’s easily the best game of 2026 so far for me.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book really surprised me…and even a month after playing through it, I think it’s the best 2D platformer Nintendo has published since NSMB Wii.

You might remember how vocal I was about Super Mario Bros Wonder abandoning 2D Mario roots in favour of a more exploration focused adventure.

Mario Bros Wonder compromised on the raw platforming challenge and malleability of Mario course designs but because Yoshi is built around experimenting with these weird and wonderful creatures in sandbox environments it’s able to capitalise on the idea of an exploration-focused 2D platformer far better.

Each level introduces some sort of weird and wonderful creature that you’re meant ot investigate to solve puzzles. I came away very impressed with the versatility of how Yoshi can play with different creatures to interact with the environment and other creatures. As you progress, the game will mix and match previous creatures with newly introduced ones and you need to use your knowledge of the wildlife to traverse the environment or discover new traits.

In short: You know how Mario Odyssey lets you capture Mario creatures and play around them? Yoshi is that, the game, and that concept is significantly expanded upon.

Looking at the credits, the original level designer from 1995’s Yoshi’s Island worked as level design lead on Mysterious Book, so it was in good hands!

Tropical Freeze maybe?
Planet Robobot? Epic Yarn?

Tropical Freeze and Robobot are definitely up there!

Epic Yarn (Yawn?) didn’t really do it for me, but Yoshi occupies a similar space in that in both games you can’t die. Yoshi comes across as a modern take on Wario Land 2 or 3 in a way.

I really enjoyed Wario Land The Shake Dimension too. Good Feel is one of the most consistent developers out there honestly.
