I guess this can be pretty broad - do you have a dedicated tate setup? Or even do you have a special process to play vertically oriented games?
I’ve seen some vertical modern TVs and some arcade machines w vertical screens in various threads, I’m wondering how widespread it is!
I’m considering having a dedicated tate CRT, but I like size so I’d be trying to turn a consumer set on it’s side safely and securely…
There are so many classic arcade games and shooters that feel cool on the vertical screens! Galaga and Donkey Kong are games I like returning to. What are y’alls favorites?
One day I would love to have the room and resources for one. Probably a PVM so it sits sideways well. I think the setup alone would encourage more play of shooters.
If I ever get an arcade cab it won’t be tate because the majority of what I’d play would be normal 4:3. So I guess from that perspective (pun unintended) it would only be if I had multiple arcade machines lol
Many years ago, it must have been around 2005-2008, I had a small apartment with a pretty cramped living room. One sofa was perpendicular to the TV cabinet (the cabinet being an old school large wooden one, as it was still the CRT era) and the front of the couch was about six inches from the left of the screen, a 68cm 4:3 Panasonic CRT. I found I could lie down on that couch and play games in TATE mode quite comfortably on the screen! Many Saturn shooters bought for reasonable prices back then were played in TATE mode. Now It would probably do my knees or back in.
Edit: okay, just a very quick photo. I’ll do a proper photo tomorrow with spec details.
The most important point though is that this is a true 4:3 screen. Using a modern widescreen for Tate looks stupid due to the top and bottom black bars.
I used to have a second CRT in TATE, but I got rid of it when it became too tiresome to move two TVs for the umpteenth time. I also got rid of this wide TV stand for an AV cart, so my one TV left is usually sitting normally, although I’ll rotate it for a few days if I get into a mood for a certain TATE game.
Also have a few cabs dedicated for TATE as rotating the monitor is troublesome, but sadly only one has a functioning chassis. Have to get around to get them fixed.
