I have an older Samsung 4k from 2015, forget the exact model. I also have monoprice 8port hdmi switch and a Denon receiver in my chain. I have a 50/55 inch tv mounted in my living room thats where I game, that’s what I play on. Having some one tell me to just go buy a computer monitor (which is all they kept saying, oh and newer high end tvs, yeah let me drop a few k to make a 140 dollar device work) and play on that as their only valid reason why the cores shouldn’t be updated to support 60hz was super annoying. It may have turned me off to MiSTer more than any thing else right now.
Like I said I can see how anyone using this on any kind of CRT is probably in heaven with it.
I just wish when people talked about it, they were a bit more upfront and forward about some things. Like that if you have issues with OSSC compatibility then you’ll have the same here and have lag. I guess I bought too hard into the its a lag free FPGA SOLUTION!
It should have less lsg than xrgb mini for sure. There are 3 video settings and the fully buffered one should be a lot like the framemeister. The other thing you can try is to go dvi mode and route your audio via toslink to your receiver. If you don’t have the io board you can buy a HDMI audio splitter and route the audio signal to your receiver while using the other dvi signal can go straight to the TV. I have a splitter that works great in 4k I can recommend tomorrow. I’d love to see if i can help you out if i can tomorrow or Sunday.
The point was it was presented as a lagless solution. Not the same as I already have. Its pretty pointless to me to use it and end up with the same level of lag as my framemeister. I’ll just keep using all my systems with the framemeister.
I have a friend whose interested in buying it. I’m waiting on my SDRAM upgrade to come in to try some other cores and if I have issues with those, I’ll just sell it all off to him.
I seriously doubt its the same but it’s honestly amazing that it’ll work on your tv as is. A little fyi the framemeister hasn’t worked with 2 out of 3 2019 tvs I’ve used it on. So you might want to hold onto it anyway.
Also the ossc by the sound of it, won’t work on your tv either. Have you put your tv into pc mode? Did you try dvi mode? Also does your tv have different inputs? My 2016 Sony 4k would only work with 4K and pc on inputs 2 and 3.
The main point of the mister is the fact that you can play tons of other machines in a cycle accurate way. I think its the best thing that has happened to retro games in years. Have you looked into the Polymega?
Yeah, from my perspective its exactly what I wanted. Like you, I have a ton of consoles hooked up but I was never satisfied with with running everything through the XRGB Mini. Poor color, lag and the scan lines left a lot to be desired.
The OSSC has its own share of problems. I will say, I have run into things time and again that actually solved issues. Specifically splitting out video and audio into two separate channels (1 audio, 1 video) with picky 4KTVs . I think this is whats brilliant about the MiSTer. The fact that you still have the double buffer mode for odd timings is actually a blessing. Your tv is at fault not so much the mister. When you change tvs eventually the mister will likely work with the no buffer mode.
Even though I know a lot, sometimes I try something I read about that I had not considered. This was maybe what I was trying to help you with. I’ve only come across one tv that I couldn’t use the low latency mode on at least a few of the cores as they all run at different speeds. Then I discovered that same tv had one input marked dvi under it and i tried t and viola it worked. Also, I have had HDMI cables that were problematic, so I always keep a few different brands around just in case.
It truly is. MLiG had an issue with their OLEDs too. Now one of my tvs works so well with MiSTer and the OSSC that I really never wanted to update the FW because I’ve had it break compatibility, especially with Sony TVs.
The only issues I have with the FM is the added lag, but the MiSTer turned out to not be the lag free solution I thought it would be. I’ll have to wait on Analogue’s systems or HDMI mods for other consoles for lag free solutions to my HDTV.
That firmware, the last one, broke Firebrand X’s profiles and from what i could tell made it worse. I reverted to the previous fw as a result. Pink screen or bad scaling. Good thing the ossc works for me.
It didn’t break Firebrand X’s profiles. There were only issues if you used scanlines on 5X scale. The issues came from them removing scanlines for custom 5x profiles. If you dont’t use scanlines at all with 5x scale then there were no problems.
I’ve been really happy with the RetroTINK-2x. It’s fire and forget painless on any TV. It even works fine through an Elgato. I realize it doesn’t provide scanlines or extra scaling modes, etc., but at the end of the day it’s original hardware with near zero lag on modern displays with very little fuss and that’s super valuable to me.
I really want one for PS2 outside of that, i don’t really have a use for the tink except in a few exceptions for bringing a console to another tv in the house. But if i do that, its always the mister.
Lately, if I’m playing anything after the 32/64 bit gen on a HD/4K its usually through a pc emulator. Primarily Dolphin because its so good. i really only care about real hardware up to that generation and with fpga stuff i figure its almost the same now. I’m not the purist i once was and that’s okay.
I guess i can add that MiSTer really opened my eyes to Mame. I never liked emulators or pi builds but now, my shift from console to arcade gaming has really made me look into it more. I search Craigslist all the time looking for candy cabs that can take real hardware as well as pc and mister. I realized that retro really is about short bursts of fun and things i can complete in a sitting or two.
Mister Update that is so cool. I really hope Kevtris can add some of these features to people who just have analogue machines. Some of these developments are so awesome.
