I’m intrigued over these authentic visual filters. While GBC and GBA look excellent, GB seems to be a miss.
There’s a lack of depth and softness to the image, and the background “off” layer should be more grainy with a paper-like texture. That grainy background sits behind the greys, and of course, the greys themselves behind the display glass, which gave the image more depth than what they are presenting today.
In other news: preorders open early next month, release date pushed to 2021.
The battery life seems to tell us the power consumption is going to be quite high - 6-10 hours gameplay off a battery similar in size to a Nintendo Switch, and just 10+ hours of sleep mode battery life. Since the high res variable refresh rate display is off in sleep mode I’m guessing the FPGA is pretty power hungry?
Edit: From the video on the website it seems the system sleeps like a Kindle - screen dims, but since it’s not e-ink I guess the backlight is just switched off. Would explain the low sleep mode battery life.
Probably not going to get a Pocket, although it’s definitely intriguing.
I finally pulled the trigger on a Mega Sg today though. It’s just too easy to use Analogue products on modern TVs and it makes all the headaches of original hardware go away outside of changing cartridges which I like because they’re mine and I like playing the real thing. Having been through a nightmare of problems with power warts recently, and knowing that my Sega CDX probably needs to be recapped, I’m just kinda fed up with dying old hardware for the system I love the most.
I had the extra money, so it was worth it to me. If I didn’t, I would have kept plowing through with all the other issues I’ve encountered recently.
Me too. I mean, I do still want one, but I just see myself still grabbing the original hardware unless it’s able to deliver an absolutely authentic experience through the control inputs (tall order!) and image quality.
The only exception would be the Game Gear, but even then I wonder how the image quality stacks up against M2’s work on 3DS Virtual Console, which used both per-sprite motion blur and the 3D effect to great effect.
You’re not alone - I really like the look of the case and it reminds me a lot of the beautiful Japanese Silver/Gold Game Boy Pocket packaging, where the device was nestled in a clear plastic case.
Think that is why I like it so much, because it looks like what the pocket I got came in, that clear plastic case. Which I found out later was the standard JP packaging and may have been a first run/limited amount thing only in the US since I could never find any info about it. Still remember keeping that clear plastic case with the box art of the hand holding the space where the gameboy would sit.
I only found out about this packaging last year when I picked up a Japanese early run boxed silver Pocket - was blown away by it. The cut-out hand around it is a neat touch, too.
Yup, that’s the one. Got any info on a US release version with that packaging? Like I got it as a gift in a group home after my original got stolen so I know/assume it wasn’t some import
Got me. Was what I had as a kid but then never saw one again and when searching online it seems harder to find then the normal box version for US release.
I found it funny how their marketing claims they plan to produce more at a later date, as if it already went into production! Cynically you just know they plan to stagger the preorders because it’s good at drumming up hype in the road to launch. But I’m sure there is truth to what they say from a logistics point of view as well.
I’m definitely not bitter that I missed out on a pre-order
