Hey! These are definitely fun to do and worth doing. I made a test cart with a socket that I could just swap eproms into and out of but I had to dremel out the case. If you go with a socketed eprom you’ll have to do the same thing. The cool thing about that is you can just swap out eproms as much as you want and burn multiple games.
Originally I struggled with these because I bought the wrong SRAM. Here’s what I used succesfully.
Any properly sized socket should work. I believe you want a dip 42 socket.
I actually only had a 40 and then clipped the end off of another to make it work.
I even got the Mega Man X SA-1 rom hack to work on cart! So far I’ve burned roms for MMX, Contra 3, Gradius 3, Super R-type, and Mario World and gotten them all to work. Really fun to do!
I even bought cool colored shells and new labels for when I make actual carts for these. Right now the only actual cart I’ve made is for Gradius 3. The other eproms are burned and working though.
Awesome, thanks, dude! I don’t fancy dremeling the cart so think I’ll try and go the flash route.
Have you done any regular games? I think I’ve got my head around SA1 mods but not regular games, looking into some adapters now. Also, the whole padding/duplicating ROMs to fit the chip lol
Yeah, I’m still not 100% clear on that part myself. The guys over at NesDEV helped me figure out how to use a hex editor to pad MMX which you have to do to get the SA-1 conversion to work.
I’ve done some Famicom English translations for Sweet Home, Mother, and Radia Senki but haven’t done any of those for SNES yet. I do plan to try it out for Mega Man & Bass and a handful of others. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
Oh! Also, if you use the adapter board and direct solder on the Dip-42 eprom witout a socket it WILL fit in a cart. Just not with a socket.
I’d honestly suggest building a test cart before you jump in to doing a lot of these. That way if something goes wrong you don’t have to desoldering anything. This is what mine looks like.
I love that blue Grad III! Yeah good point about making a test cart, if I figure this all out I’d like to convert my PAL/NTSCJ collection which is a fair few games. Thanks for sharing these pics, appreciate all the help too, now to buy some adapter boards!
I’ve been meaning to post a larger reply - and I will do so soon, it’s just been so busy at work - but I want to get my wonermega set up a nice and celebratory fashion. In the meantime, here’s a post on my site showing the lid working.
Thanks so much @Danexmurder and I will post more soon. You’re a miracle worker.
It’s been way too long since I’ve posted here so I wanted to give a quick update.
If this is too off-topic mods feel free to move it.
I moved back in January which means I haven’t had a shop for a while. The reason my shop isn’t set up yet is because my new one will be significantly bigger and out in my new barn. Downside is that I’m having to run power out to the barn which is taking lots of time and money.
It’s in progress though and headed in the right direction. Thought I’d post a quick picture. My old AV cart is there for scale. You may notice a new project in the background as well.
Hey, thank you! We’re still doing a lot around the property. The house is 103 years old and needed a new roof, stuff like that. It’s starting to feel like home though.
The barn is literally bigger than my last place square footage wise.
The plan is to build a new band room out there and to build my new electronics shop as well.
. My RG-M1 console is experiencing capacitor leakage, and some pads on the PCB are corroded. Could you please provide information about the tracks and connection points for below components? Thanks =)
I’m not dead! I promise. I recently did a short video update to show how my shop is coming along. I’m hoping to have it done by May and am hoping to get back into modding and making videos this summer. Cheers!
Thanks! When I get things put together I’ll do another walk through. I may actually do a video while I’m putting my AV cart together. People have asked for that type of thing before and you don’t see a lot of videos where people actually show HOW they do they’re crazy cool retro set ups.
Mostly I’m just happy to be closing in on having a shop again. I’ve really missed getting to engage with this hobby. My retro games have all been put up since I moved.
