OK, OK, I couldn’t live with it being crooked, so I just went ahead and fixed it. Found the problem: part of the screen bracket didn’t quite fit over a screw mount. Trimmed a tiny amount of plastic and it’s much better now. Bonus shot - added a custom palette that’s close to the GB Light screen:
Perfect!
Always suspected the court room in Ace Attorney was never meant to be yellow, and indeed, Capcom never recalibrated the game colours for newer DS hardware. Pretty stark difference.
Try it on an unlit GBA, or an AGS-001 that would likely be the closest “intent.”
Btw I love the translations in those games, so full of personality and their own crazy logic.
Yeah, definitely. The Micro is somewhere in between those and the AGS-101/DS Lite (shudder) in colour saturation.
Does it work?
Looks amazing… what kit did you buy?
I recently repaired a game gear that was about that gross inside. It may be worth salvaging.
Looks absolutely wonderful. What game is that?
I believe it’s Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 if I’m not mistaken.
Yep, that’s it. Sadly the game will no longer save, even after replacing the battery, so I just keep it lying around for testing stuff.
No, it doesn’t work at the moment. I’ll spend some time on it over the weekend and see what happens.
I got this one off Aliexpress:
Honestly, it’s so much better than anything I’ve gotten from BennVenn or Funnyplaying.
Yeah, I had to replace all the battery contacts, do a full recap, and put a new power board in to get the game gear to work.
Thankfully I didn’t need to go to those lengths, but after 30 minutes of various cleaning techniques and failed attempts…it lives!
Although it’s a sad and rather ugly life at this point.
If I didn’t already have an unmodded, functioning DMG original I might spend some time trying to fix the screen, but those horizontal line errors are a total pain in the ass.
Looks like a good candidate for an IPS if you ask me!
This might be filed under “nit-picking”, but does anyone have a source for a GBC glass screen lens that’s actually a color match for the original? Everything I’ve ever bought has been “black”, but the OEM color is more of a very dark gray (and matches the buttons). Here’s an attempt to show what I mean:
To answer my own question (and in case anyone else is looking for something similar), I finally found someone claiming to have a glass lens that’s not pure black. I’ll order a couple this week and will confirm:
Glad you found one!
