This was announced months ago, I’d not really paid attention to it until I learned about the 1:1 screen, which is custom made. It’s also viewable in sun although I’ve not see an image with the backlight off (assuming it works like the DS Phat?). It’s kind of pricey, would have been an instant buy if it cost a 1/3rd less, going to wait to see how things pan out when it launches. Also like that they mentioned they’re aiming to nail the colour space, I guess if it is based on the mister core as speculated in the vid below, it would be as good as that.
I was interested in this, but the price is kind of steep for what you’re getting, found out about the guy making it and lost all interest tbh. seeing the screen shots doesnt make it look too different from the Pocket either
If it’s exactly like the Mister option it should be pretty good. I revisited the Pocket colour space after they updated to finally provide something a bit more accurate and it’s fairly close but not perfect. I’d love it if someone really geeked out about the colour space and provided settings like overcast, direct sunlight, fluorescent interior, incandescent bulb, 6500k LED etc The stock reflective screen has a multitude of looks depending on lighting conditions.
Forgot to post about this when it was revealed. I really like the concept of the device - having native resolution, with each pixel having its own RGB grid, and (promised) superior colour accuracy to Analogue Pocket.
These two things will make a huge difference as the pixel filter in the Pocket is serviceable at best, and does not hold up under close scrutiny.
The sapphire screen lens is also a great feature to have, as is the very high peak brightness. The Pocket’s pixel filter reduces the already low brightness further, making it difficult to use outdoors.
But I really can’t get over the industrial design of the thing. While Palmer insists it was designed in collaboration with Japanese designers and is focused on a 2000s (iirc) aesthetic, that doesn’t mean it’s not ugly. Next to something like Game Boy Pocket, Neo Geo Pocket, or even the more cheerful aesthetic of Game Boy Color, this thing is ugly!
The other thing dampening my enthusiasm is me picking up a working Game Boy Color this week. This is probably my first time using GBC since I got my Game Boy Advance back in 2001, since my childhood system no longer switches on.
Have been so impressed by the original GBC screen and its reflectivity that I no longer understand the obsession with IPS mods and backlit FPGA systems other than their preservation chops.
I have been saying this for years now. Give me a GBC under sunlight or a nice desk lamp any day. I don’t even enjoy these games on GB Player with GBI ULL with a CRT as much.
I’ve made my peace with the ‘interlacing artifact’ the stock GBC/GBA screens use to minimise blur, initially it was my reason to look at IPS mod for a GBC but the colour disparity is hard to overlook in a lot of games.
To be fair to the Pocket, the motion resolution is quite good (with frame blending off), I think it’s a little better than stock GBC/GBA screens (check out Super Mario Land’s first stage, single pixel pyramid background asset holds up very well to horizontal scrolling).
Finally found a pic of it in sunlight, looks like it’s actually a transreflective screen, sucks that such a nice screen is associated with this alt right twat
Yeah that’s probably what you’re seeing, kinda looks like bob-deinterlacing, can happen when the screen is static too but is quite noticeable when the screen scrolls vertically. I feel like maybe the GBA SP is worse for this but also depends on brightness and angle. IIRC the PSP3000 uses a similar method to reduce ghosting.
Looking at the hearts and chimney in this screenshot it looks to have a highly noticeable drop shadow like the DMG screen.
