Gaming Magazines and Newsletters: Old and "New"

I was an avid reader of Mean Machines SEGA, MEGA, Super Play, CV&G and Official Sega Saturn Magazine.
I also had subscriptions to Edge (UK) magazine and from the US a magazine called “Gamers Republic”.

I eventually amassed a huge gaming magazine collection (I had kept everything I bought from around 1992 until 2002) but then unfortunate circumstances meant it all had to be sold.

However, I could not bear to part with my Role Call Fanzines which I still own:

Snatched a complete run of Next Gen(eration) and Gamefan (besides the first 3 issues and maybe the last?) from a local junk/books/record store a few years ago. The owner guy asked me what I was into and I said “uhh videogame strategy guides?” and he took me to the back for a couple boxes of mags. Original owner was NICE to them too, plastic sleeves like comics. Also a box with some 100s era NP and Dreamcast mag and some EGMs and GamePros. It was a great haul.

They’re heavy but videogame magazines meant a lot to me as a kid! So we’ll keep these in the collection forever.

Back in the day my faves by far were early Nintendo Power and Game Players. Then I followed Chris Slate to PSM. I miss seeing game mags on the stand at the grocery store :frowning:

I still collect guides, love when they get published in softcover. Hardcovers are classy but less fun to read/flip though.

Retro Gamer is still a must for me every month. Such a great magazine. There’s just something about screenshots in print that makes me smile.

Highly recommend the Out-of-Print Archive for those who don’t already know about it. I used to talk to its owner on the old “VideogameImports” forums and even wrote a SEGA Saturn Princess Crown review for his old Twin Dreams website.

I really do love fanzines though and been buying Hyper Play RPG since its first trial “Issue 0” release. It is heavily inspired by Super Play and Role Call.

HyperPlayRPG

I actually entered and won a competition Hyper Play RPG had for some Super Play Issues and when I found out later that the Editor Kincl was looking for issues of Role Call he was missing so he could complete his retrospective article on the fanzine, I provided him with the scans I made from mine that I had previously uploaded as a request to Underground-Gamer many years ago.

I still mourn Underground Gamer’s passing. ;(

Underground Gamer had a fantastic community. It was also such an amazing resource and the loss of their archives continues to be a tremendous loss for retro gamers as we have still not seen anything of its scale since its closure and probably never will again.

I did save the files for the Underground Gamer Magazine that unfortunately only managed two issues before the closure and have just re-hosted them if anyone cares to check them out for whatever reason:

Underground Gamer Magazine #1
Underground Gamer Magazine #2

This passed me by, so I just read about it at http://privatetrackers.wikia.com/wiki/Underground_Gamer

I should also mention I get Nintendo Force in the mail. That mag is an excellent official feeling Nintendo mag with a really old school feel on new school content. Highly recommended.

So I’ve been poking around the retromags website and it’s truly a labor of love. I’ve noticed that for a number of magazine marked “missing” I have a copy of in my personal collection. I’ll see if it’s possible to help and contribute scans for their archive.

They’re very particular with what they will and won’t accept in terms of scan quality. Quite off-putting levels of perfection in my experience.

I now have feed scanners at both A4 and A3 size and intend to submit my first scans soon. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Dam I remember underground gamer and their sister tracker site. Great times and they helped preserve a lot of great old stuff. I still have some old stuff from there saved on dvds.

I never could afford many mags but I remember rereading the few ones my parents allowed me to buy(mainly Nintendo power and 1 Xbox mag).

Found some old posters in buried on my dresser drawers. Thought you guys would enjoy them.

That’s EDGE UK issue 16 with Twinsen from Little Big Adventure on the cover. Full PDF at Sega Retro https://segaretro.org/File:Edge_UK_016.pdf#filelinks

My 3 Electric Brain scans were accepted: New Releases: Electric Brain Issues 33, 34, 35 - New Releases - Retromags Community

There’s an Italian guy running a Patreon to help him scan his Japanese magazine collection:

If you live in the US, I highly recommend the current Retro Gamer issue on Barnes & Noble newsstands. It’s a Konami retrospective issue that includes a special Konami focused booklet and … STICKERS! It’s pretty cool. Issue 195 is the one you’re looking for.

I buy Retro Gamer every month, but I know it’s pricey for some people. Your $15 plus tax is worth spending this month.

Figures they would do this right after I cancelled my subscription. :unamused:

Good to know about the Konami issue, though. I think being a little more selective is the better approach for me. All the articles from the UK microcomputer era month after month was just too much for me to justify a sub.

I have never subbed. I always buy on the newsstand. I haven’t missed one in a long time, though. Even with the UK micro coverage they often have, there is still so much I want to read in there. They’ve also been getting more modern with their retro. It’s getting to where PS2/Xbox/Gamecube is awfully Retro.
