MiSTer FPGA - OT

Welp, I ordered an analogue mister from misteraddons. They were out of stock for so long, that I let FOMO take over when they became available this week.

Here’s to spending 600 bucks that I really shouldn’t be spending though lol. I may ask for some help on setting it up here.

I really wanted a supergun setup to play shmups in a low-lag environment on my PVM, but given how things are going in the secondhand market (and just being totally burnt out at work and taking a professional hiatus) I have to make peace with this being the solution instead.

Looking forward to having arcade accurate CAVE games rather than the PS1/Saturn/ps4/switch ports I’ve been playing - all of which feel like they vary in quality. It’s a crazy kit that I really wish existed a decade ago.

I love my og hardware, but this is the future.

that was main motivation for getting a mister. playing Dodonpachi with almost zero lag and arcade perfect is almost worth the price of admission alone, not to mention a whole host of other arcade games I could never really play properly (AvP for example). the whole Neo Geo library (Metal Slug with no input lag, looking at you PS2 anthology!). you won’t regret it for sure

PS2 Metal Slug Anthology is such a case of “what could have been” that it’s a shame.

480i, lag, incorrect aspect ratio, and a bad port of MS6 (the only port of this game on console hardware that I’m aware of).

Then the VC releases of these games had their share of issues too (lack of flashes on boss hits).

They never came out properly for any pre-hd system other than the AES.

you can actually hex edit the anthology to 240p (you can do the same thing to the Neo Geo collection which includes MS1). I always wondered why the games seemed harder on it until I found out that they have crazy input lag

I think MS6 has a standalone port on the PS2 if I’m not wrong, but I think the best way to play it is the Atomiswave conversion on the DC. played a little bit of it and it plays great. even has a widescreen hack if you’re so inclined

So they’re in stock, eh? I have been thinking of getting one. Don’t have the funds right now. Keep us updated on your impressions.

I think I may end up doing that, but don’t really want to sacrifice my stock Dreamcast in the process to install an ODE.

you can always burn it right? provided you have one of the model 0 or 1 DC’s, it should work

I don’t think the port works via disc.

I know what you mean, I ordered mine and after it shipped had that same feeling. Like, do I need this haha.

In any event my unit has shipped so it’s too late to turn back now!

Nice, congrats! I really like the MA aluminum case…but not enough to throw out my current acrylic cases.

Do his bundles come with an SD card setup and everything? If not, I use this process for initial setup:

Then download update_all, put it in the Scripts folder and run it

Profit! Lol

If you’re updating on your PVM the update text may only show in the on screen display portion of the screen (center UI portion). When I used direct_video the whole screen would show the update on my PVM, but when I changed to VGA->BNC RGB it would only show in the middle portion. If that happens, you can use PuTTY to update your MiSTer from your MAC/PC/Laptop. You can even do it from your phone, but I’m not that fancy, lol. One of the users in the ERA thread showed me how to do it. Once you get yours, lmk if it’s something that would help.

alternatively you can set it up on any HDMI TV or monitor just to get started. I found RetroRGB’s guide to be pretty simple and effective

basically flash mister fusion, install it. then run the update_all script…and you’re good to go

if you’re using the analog I/O board, just set ypbpr to 1 if you’re using component and you’re all set

I just got the thing and I tested a Genesis rom - all seems good so far. The UI is a little hard to get accustomed to but I can hang for now.

One question - I got the preconfigured sd card from Mister Addons, so I assume it’s up to date. In what folder would I put a CPS2 rom? I’m not seeing anything called “Arcade” or “CPS2” in the Games folder. Am I missing something?

there is a update_mame-getter script which will download all the roms for you

if you want to add them manually, they need to go in the games/mame folder and must match the mame naming convention (which are matched by the .MRA files in the _Arcade folder on the root. it’s a bit of a pain

Finally had a bit of time to tinker with this bad boy! Still setting it up game-wise but couldn’t resist jumping into some arcade games. Hooked up to my Sony PVM 20L2 via RGB - directly into the BKM 129x expansion card via the mono price HD15 to BNC RGB cable

Do we all try Marvel Vs. Capcom as one of the first games? lol. I haven’t seen the arcade version in the flesh since the early 2000s. It really puts my PS1 copy to shame. It was a trip to check it out in perfect 240p.

it was also one of the first one I tried, but it didn’t work for me. was complaining about 1 file or another. I’ve played it in 240p on the Dreamcast, but that one inaccurate by all accounts:(

Out of interest I did a quick and dirty comparison between the MiSTer Mega Drive core and my VA1 playing Sonic 2 and there was no difference in brightness, I rapidly flipped between the two inputs and they were nearly exactly the same (my VA1 has a slight yellow tint that may be due to the 32X).

I took pictures but I only have an iPhone 12 and they weren’t indicative at all of the subtle difference between the two - this is also far from definitive because my consoles go through an unpowered 10 port start auto switcher which probably brings the brightness down a bit from stock.

In any event on my personal setup there is no loss of brightness on the MiSTer, but that might just be due to how I have everything wired up on the console side.

thanks for the info

my setup is somewhat similar, I use a component switcher and the Mister goes into it via a Monoprice DSub to component cable. I thought it might have been because I had 2 component switchers daisy chained, but I even compared my PSP which was on the same chain as the Mister against the PSX core, with the same results. it’s not even subtle imo, when switching between the 2 it’s very noticeable, even on camera:

Wow that’s very noticeable. I wonder if it’s an issue with the ypbpr only?

it’s even more pronounced to the eye

that’s a good point, I don’t have a way to test either RGB or even straight VGA without getting another transcoder unfortunately
