Huh, Ok… interesting! I’d love to see a video of this in action with some good off screen footage. Wonder how it might clean up the image on either a CRT or modern display. Or pair with a retrotink and the like. Such a weird thing to aim for composite but ok, glad this stuff exists.

Yeah video of one in action is an odd omission.

It’s an interesting project, but I’m not sure who the audience is. People on the more casual end would likely prefer a NES mini to hook up to a TV/HDMI monitor or would emulate on PC/Rasp Pi/phone. The more enthusiast crowd would RGB mod their NES and use a CRT or upscaler for flat screen, HDMI mod, an Analogue product, or Mister. This is kind of in the middle where, besides being new and not 40 year old components, it doesn’t seem to offer much beyond a typical NES. Clip the CIC leg and add a Blinking Light Win to an og NES and it’s sorted.

I’m not trying to be negative about it, it’s always great to see new options and ways to get people into retro games, but I’m not sure who this appeals to. Maybe mod it to add in RGB or HDMI? I don’t know. 33 backers averaging $246 each so there are some enthusiastic about it. Perhaps NES collectors who want all things NES I guess. I could see them interested in it. Retire the og and use this primarily.

It’s open source so I imagine we’ll see a board revision with hdmi (and more components)

That aspect somehow flew over my head lol smh

Is Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light worth playing? How long is it?

Between 27 and 40 hours according to these two crowd-sourced data

Looks like my Famicom Disk System has given up the ghost.

Likely just the belt, but I haven’t had to change it in 20 years. Pretty sure I got this unit in 2002.

One issue with having so much vintage equipment is all the maintenance…

20 years seems to be about the max for these belts. Had to have mine changed recently too.

So the belt was okay. Small single side games loaded okay, but it got stuck on multi-load games, eg ones that do an initial boot load, then a second, often to read save files.

Turns out it’s the head movement mechanism getting stuck. Giving it a small kick gets it going

I’ll look into re-greasing the rail, or looking for anything else preventing it from turning over.

I love these images. Wish I knew Japanese to fully appreciate it.

It is not an elegant way or ideal translation, but if there are specific sections you are interested in the Google Translate app on phones (via camera) is decent.

If it does not make sense, try turning the camera away and then back on it again - the translation will sometimes change/improve.

From this point you can also press the camera button to take a photo and let it do a more comprehensive translation (by uploading the photo).

And also the same by uploading an image or sharing an image from your photos folder into Google Lens.

My pick for one of the most underappreciated game sequels. Really liked how it went from tunneling underground to terraforming the land.

Apparently the DS Dig Dug blends the two styles of gameplay together between both screens.

Oh really? Had no idea about that one. I need to get the NES game. Definitely a hole in my collection.

The best Rare game on NES and one of the most personality-driven, as well as having approachable gameplay in playing as a snake able to smoothly move around.
