I was thinking about starting Xenoblade Chronicles soon. I only have the Wii mote/nunchuck controller. Is that the preferred way to play, or the classic controller? Or just personal preference?
I always found original Wii bowling to be easier than the Plus version. Imho there is some evidence to what you are saying.
Definitely use the classic controller for Xenoblade. It actually shipped with a special edition red CC Pro in NA and is 100% the intended way to experience the game.
Yes, the additional shoulder buttons are necessary. You have to use extra hold and press combinations on the wii mote/nunchuck for some controls.
Ok, thank you both!
[edit] grabbed a black pro off eBay. I like the look of the white ones but all the used ones had yellowed analog sticks.
That’s different in that the game was changed to support the plus controller. It’s technically a sequel.
I’m referring to games that were made before the plus controller that play slightly differently with plus and original controllers.
So would the og wiimote + the motion plus add-on be the best setup to use? I’m assuming pre-motion plus software would use the og’s gyro unless the add-on forces the motion plus gyro to be used as default
I have read the remotes with the built in functionality are more accurate than the ones with the add on for motion+ related titles.
I think ideally, if @matt is correct (and I am going to assume he is, since matt’s a credible dude) you’d have a standard Wii remote for non-motion plus games, and an integrated motion+ for the later games that utilized it. So, two different Wii remotes, each for their respective libraries - not ideal, I realize.
I’ve honestly never had an issue with my integrated Wii Motion Plus which is why I’m interested to see data based on what matt is saying.
That’s a good point, hadn’t considered that integrated MP would be better than add-on MP. I would love to see a shootout with all three setups
I’m still testing. Homebrew utility showed very similar results for all my Wii controllers. Plus controllers showed perhaps fast update rate? Hard to capture the difference.
I’d encourage any of you to try TrackMania Wii with both types of Wiimote. This game has the most noticeable difference for me.
Some others I’ve spotted recently.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
- uses the full Wii screen area (rare!)
- HUD and UI are pixel perfect
- game scene is a blury mess, upscaled from some lower resolution
Sin & Punishment
- similar to above
- but not full screen
Geometry Wars Galaxies
- glorious pixel perfection!
- galaxy of single pixel stars is amazing to see
Wii U streaming of Wii games is a lot better than I gave it credit for back in 2013 when the feature was introduced! I think three years of tabletop mode gaming with the Switch convinced me that the GamePad’s display is a fine size when I thought it was too small. And the Wii U GamePad stand is surprisingly sturdy, much more so than the Switch’s kickstand.
WiiFlow, the SD/USB loader I use on Wii has just got an update to fix a long-standing video problem that meant some PAL games had no video output.
A nice side-effect is that PAL games that did have video output are all now sharper and clearer - this includes my PAL copies of Zak & Wiki, Sin & Punishment 2, TrackMania all of which I have always thought had blurry video, even over VGA.
So, RESULT!!!
(No other launchers affected AFAIK)
modified Wii Nintendont boot.dol with 480p fix applied, so all GameCube games launched through Nintendont will be fixed.
In my experience, on a native 640x480 VGA LCD, it’s as if a very pale texture is removed from the image.

This is very cool.
So, no other system wide fix needs to be applied?
If it’s just the Nintendont boot.dol, that’s very convenient.
Thanks!
Yup! That one Nintendont dol covers you for all 480p GameCube games launched with it.
Awesome.
Thanks again!
Any word on a WiiDual replacement? Feeling the desire to play Thousand Year Door and never got the gamecube component cables.
No news.
Not good news.
WiiDuals pre-order deadline passed by now, too.
