One Year Post Implosion (RGB’s First Anniversary Imminent)

Absolutely agree Eccles.
I just started posting here, main reason being everyone seems so chill and respectful.

Great work on making this an amazing place to hang out guys!

Thanks! We love this communinity and wanted to keep it together. As @Peltz said we take a pretty hands off approach to moderating but to be honest this community makes it easy.

We’ve taken a backseat and let the community grow organically and I think it’s worked out great. The people who post here really want to be here and contribute something. We don’t have any drive-by posts or users pushing their own agenda. We get quality discussion and tight concise threads and that’s exactly how we want it !

Love y’all and looking forward to what year 2 brings !

I mostly lurked at neogaf but have had a ton of fun being active in this community. It really is the best enthusiast community on the internet that I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of. People on this board act like actual people and that is a rare thing these days. I’ve learned a lot here and it has really rounded out a hobby that I’ve been into for the better part of two decades. Can’t wait to see how this community continues to grow. Cheers!

Big thanks to those who put this whole place together. I really appreciate the use of Discourse for the forum software. It’s not perfect, but it really is a much more modern package for forums that I really appreciate. It does notifications really well and I love that posts are baked in with images and video and links.

I knew when I saw this was filled with my old NeoGAF friends that it could not go wrong and it’s been a pleasure joining everyone here. I’ve learned a ton, too!

Agreed with @DaveLong the use of Discourse is what makes me smile every time I drop by. I use the Discourse app to get forum notifications on iOS.

The other thing that I really enjoy and value about RGB is that there very little non-gaming fluff clogging up the video game discussions. It’s great to have a community of like minded gamers.

These days I post way less, and I do kinda miss how our little corner would be its own community within the mostly ignorant gaf-community that surounded us, making sure we always had stuff like “sonic was never good” to discuss. But all in all, I am just happy that our community survived, and that I have somewhere to go to read about (mostly) retro games. Cheers guys!

Thanks to everyone that helped setup and continue to run this site.
It’s refreshing to be among like minded individuals who have a passion for different systems, I learn something new here on a daily basis.
It’s a rarity these days to be part of a community that is not being ruined by politics, unless you count Mario vs Sonic (obviously Mario wins)

Thank you.

I play games to NOT think about politics (except the Metal Gear series, Twilight Struggle, Tetris, etc.)

@apathetic
Present company excused of course

I would venture most of the people here are older and many probably just want to talk about retro games and hardware. I haven’t seen one person on this board that I haven’t liked. Everyone here is at the very least respectful but on average, very friendly.

When I get a free moment I look forward to coming here and talking to the few good friends I have made (some of whom I message back and forth all day outside of the discussions here) I really never felt like I was part of the community at Gaf. That is, except the few boards most of the people here occupied. Sure, I still care about modern games but it feels like this crowd loves the games they play and don’t really bring up games they dislike. Its quite a breath of fresh air.

Some of my favorites have been the show us your setup, rgb pick up thread and 240p. I love the discussions around the new hardware for old games and I really love lurking in the threads of consoles I don’t own because there is that thing inside that really pushes me to get that next console.

I really want to thank @Peagles and @Socksfelloff for rescuing me when gaf went nuclear. Its been a great year and I will continue to come here as long as its around.

Nope, I miss them. I only went back because I couldn’t decide on my favorite gif.

That’s one thing I really love about the people here too. The discussion is usually on games people like. And when someone doesn’t like a game, it’s more “I tried and wanted to like it but couldn’t because XYZ”. Or “these types of games don’t appeal to me.” Games are games. And they’re meant to be fun. Being a fan isn’t some sort of religion.

Other gamers tend to be more like “this game is trash and the people who like it are wrong.” As if being tribal about which products you like is normal. :unamused:

I’m glad there’s none of those pointless ad hominem attacks on RGB. They don’t have any place here.

I think that’s simply a product of age. Older folks, like many of those who make up this board so far, know there’s a lot more grey in the world than black and white. We know you can’t boil things down to SUCKS and AWESOME all the time.

That said, we all know Mario is better than Sonic.

:joy::rofl::joy::rofl:

To be fair we also have the benefit of being a smaller community that has come to know each other in a way that would be harder with more members. As such people can do things like instantly disregard me being hyperbolic about the 32x when I make the accurate claim that it is trash and the people who like it are wrong.

There is more grey in my hair now too! I think the only time I say a game is trash or sucks is when I am trying to find a reason not to buy it or want to get rid of it from my collection. I don’t actually have binary feelings for most games. Some of my favorite games have downsides and sometimes games I don’t like impress me on some level too.

Time, not money, is my enemy for gaming. I spend way more than I have time to enjoy. Probably the case with 99% of the people here.

How dare you?! I agree

When I was a kid we belonged to a small church. Maybe 300+ people and we had our service in a Warehouse that was repurposed. As soon as the church bought a permanent property, thousands of people started coming. The community I had known for 15+ years had just lost the community feeling. I stopped going to church and never really cared to go back after that.

Keeping your community just small enough and growing it slowly and organically is the key. I have seen boards get popular or get invaded by other communities and most, if not all of them became toxic.

It’s a tricky thing to achieve for sure. Hopefully, we can continue to foster the sense of community people have mentioned here so far. If that ever feels like it’s not the case, definitely tell me and the other mods. Your feedback is key.

I think in this case you’re looking at a slow growth simply based on the topic and the focus on the topic. Retro has a limited appeal which is totally fine and will keep people slowly trickling in.

You also have a lot of people here with good strong personalities so new folks will likely take a little time to get to know the board before posting. Most people who don’t like Retro gaming are just going to skip the board entirely.

I must say I’m very, very glad this place exists. Focused discussion from a wide range of informed and well-versed individuals with a lot to say about a variety of topics in retro gaming.

I also appreciate the pace of the discussion and threads. It never feels overwhelming and I think that also encourages everyone to spend good time writing out each reply.

@matt told me about RGB around the time I was revisiting the DS’s library many months ago and I’m disappointed with myself for not checking it out sooner!

I’ve run several local jeep clubs, and many different online communities, from clans, guilds and teams, to interest groups.

It’s not easy to keep everyone on the same page, and undoubtedly you run into people that are toxic or upset at others in the group.

The biggest lesson that I’ve learned is that you can never please everyone. The good people running the joint need to stay strong and stick to their ideals, and good people will follow!

So, good job guys!

That said, this community feeld very tight knit, and I am always excited to get back to the site and catch up to the conversations. Hopefully it continues for a very long time.

I did? Cool!
