Looks very clean and even, I like it!
Thanks! There will be some adjustment of shelves for sure. Everything not on the shelves right now is of the smaller GBA/DS/CD/cart-size variety. I may split some rows differently to get all that in. I also want to bring stuff together as best I can. Dreamcast and Saturn are currently spilt, etc.
It’s fun though! I’m always popping stuff open to have a look at the discs, carts and books.
I’d love to see your Saturn collection, considering I’ve been slightly obsessed with the system of late. It looks like you have a lot of Saturn stuff…!
I do! Both domestic (US) and import stuff. I’ll take a photo in the next day or so. I have two regrets… Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers, both of which I could’ve bought brand new for $50 back when they shipped.
Oof, yeah, we all have our regrets… I remember seeing Crusader of Centy in a store once, thinking it had a cool sword on the cover, and then never saw it again (not like I had the money at the time as I was likey like 10, but maybe I could have begged my mom or something). By the time I bought my Saturn from a friend around 2002 or 2003, those games had already shot up in price, though I was more interested in Shining Force III and (of all things) Bug! and Bug! Too. Thankfully there’s ODEs and emulation!
I’ve purchased both Saga and Burning Rangers as imports so I feel like I’ve fulfilled my need to own them, so playing them via emulation doesn’t feel dirty at all.
Looking nice. Wish I had a room to do that.
Nearly there… have to get some backing for my Kallax and integrate the new output module in my scalable video switch you can see behind my Virtual Boy, then install my LED light strips on the backing… Here’s a before and after:
Looks good! I just completed my KALLAX build today minus some inserts because I didn’t know how many half shelves I might need. I have use for at least two or three more.
Also, the only negative with KALLAX was discovered today… The Tower of Power will not fit! Too damn wide with a top loading Sega CD. Still, that’s gotta be in my setup because of 32X. If not, I’d just roll with the CDX only.
Nice! Looks good - what is the system between the Wii and the phat PS2 on the right there?
And yeah… The Genesis 1/32X combo was a concern for me - it just barely fits horizontally. Having to remove the 32X to play CD games off the Mega Everdrive Pro is a pain, but one I’m willing to deal with. I had a model 1 Sega CD back in the day, but it needed repairs and back then I’d not soldered and still have very little experience with disc trays and regreasing and whatnot, so I sold it for parts. I don’t miss it, tbh… But MAN am I jealous of your CDX. I have always liked that little thing… Even if it wouldn’t be practical for me these days, I still kinda want one lol
Definitely post some pics of everything once it’s all hooked up! We went and bought some thin wood backing, but it needs to be cut and sanded and painted, after which holes have to be cut in it for cables… I’m hoping my wife and I can finish that up by next weekend, but who knows.
That CDX is the one you can see here…
Our own @Danexmurder did a complete recap on my CDX. His first! Don’t miss Part 2.
I think I’m going with an open back because A) I’m lazy and B) lotsa cords. I do plan to do some kind of cord wrangling so they are in line with the shelving and not all hanging down everywhere, but again, A might be a problem with that. Haha. I haven’t had my stuff set up properly in almost a year now so it’s time to get playing. I’m not getting any younger!
Looking at your setup and what I have, I think I need three more dividers. The Neo Geo CD is pretty bulky but I should be able to get discs in and out just fine. Same with Saturn. Super Nintendo and N64 are a bit high with a cart in them, but I really don’t want to add any more KALLAX to this one.
Originally I planned to set a 32" Samsung on top of the unit, but I may get something nicer now to attach to the wall above all this stuff. I have a Super Nt, Mega Sg and Analogue Duo that currently would occupy a basement TV (that’s 84"… LG… got it from a friend), but then I’m carting games up and down to play on either original hardware or HDMI hardware. Not sure what I want to do yet. I do need a TV with HDMI in here for the PS3 and its preferred connection. Probably the Xbox One will end up in here too for backwards compatibility with all my Xbox stuff (that I play the least for sure…)
Bookmarked! I love repair videos, I’ll watch that tomorrow on my lunch most likely.
I don’t blame you for forgoing it. I spent so much time yesterday putting things together and moving things around, my back has been killing me lol. I haven’t even done the back yet!
I’m lucky I don’t have to insert discs for the PS1, PS2, Saturn, or Dreamcast - they all either have ODEs or (in the PS2’s case) a HDD with games on it. Makes things much easier on the setup. Meanwhile the Gamecube doesn’t need nearly as much space, since its picoboot modded and I have no discs for it… But I just love that spice orange. The Genesis, SNES, and especially Famicom needing space to insert and remove carts is huge though. For example:
I haven’t been able to play my NES carts with that adapter on the Famicom without having to have the Famicom and Disk System next to each other, which just doesn’t look right.
You may notice I don’t have any Xbox hooked up… That’s true housewide. The newest console I have is a Switch, which I adore, but I’ve had no interest in the PS5 or any of the myriad Xboxs they’ve come out with in the past decade+… Outside the Final Fantasy VII Remake series (which I’ve just been playing on Steam Deck), there hasn’t been much I feel I’ve been missing out on, hence my posting here lol. I think I’m more of a retro guy in general.
I hooked up the Sega CDX for a test today. Was having weird shut off problems at first because apparently I didn’t plug the power cord in all the way! Yikes! Anyway, after that and other stupidity on my part, I fired it up.
Pirates is a very cool game and one I hadn’t played before. I finished a couple levels and much of a third. Looks amazing with some neat effects and yeah, that’s just a composite picture. Looks great on this Trinitron.
Lots more to set up. This was a good way to start tho!
this is absolutely gorgeous, by the way. well done!
That does look great for composite, dang. Is it possible to mod the CDX for RGB or s-video, anyway? Do you even want to?
And thanks, @IrishNinja! I’ve never been satisfied with displaying/storing GB/GBC/GBA games, and this is the best I can come up with.
I think there are mods, yeah. I have the HD Retrovision component cable for Sega Genesis tho so if I want to go with better output, that’s the option. I also have the adapter to use that cable with my Neo Geo so it does swap around sometimes.
I feel like I must have known this, but it’s been so long since I set things up that I did not recall that this Trinitron has Component inputs! I will probably just use the Neo that way now. It’s a great TV.
If you ever do want to do a triple bypass holler at your boy! Should have my shop back up and running in the next couple of months.
If you do NESRGB mods, hit me up too - in a few months, I may be interested in one haha
It is complete.
Lights off:
Lights on:
Lights on, shot so you can see the backing my wife and I made:
Those are luan 1/4 inch thick pieces of wood that we painted white and brad nailed to the back of my Kallaxs. There’s only the one seam there, behind the Gamecube and RetroUSB AVS - and that’s really only there because our car was too small to being the piece of wood we wanted to home that would have not shown any seams lol. And honestly, it doesn’t bother me, and even if it eventually did, I could probably cover it up with some white tape or something, make it nearly invisible. As is, who cares. The LEDs are still a glowing, slowly changing RGB set from Ikea, the same as I’d had before, although it’s a new set that I took care to install a little better this time.
I’m considering getting some sort of light setup to illuminate the systems from behind, but I basically rewired everything and cut out as many cables and power strips as I could, so I’m basically unable to right now anyway lol.
I dig it! LED lighting is on my agenda as well. I have a strip here already but haven’t decided how and where I want to use it all yet.
I really like how the backing looks on your KALLAX. I may attempt something down the road now. Still just getting the systems where I want them here and deciding if I want any other inserts.
