PS3 / Xbox 360 Appreciation and Collecting Thread - Are They Retro Yet?

Weird. I really didn’t like how they had everything unlocked by default in this version of the game. It kind of misses what made the series so cool back in the day back on PS1 and then DC.

FYI if you download the standalone version of the patch on the PSN store you also get bonus dragons.

FWITW Julien Eggebrecht insists the game was profitable. What really killed Factor 5 is, as i recall from a former employee’s thread on twitter some months back, is that they had an unannounced Superman game that got cancelled because its publisher went bankrupt and this was at the cusp of the 2008 recession so Factor 5 couldn’t get any of the lends they would’ve normally been elligible to while waiting to take on a new project. Though Lair’s reception killing that animal TPS they had with Sony probably didn’t help.

I didn’t buy that version I think otherwise I’d check for you. MS has been having issues recently in the last 2 years. Hopefully with more pestering it gets resolved

Since I recently got a few 360 systems working, any digital only titles/ DLC I should think about obtaining while I still can?

I believe there are some region specific stuff, otherwise I’d google a list of games that have not made it through the BC program and see if anything peaks your interest.

There are some really cool oddities on the 360 in the Retro or Retro Adjacent category. Some things I’d recommend…

Hydro Thunder Hurricane
Sega Vintage Collection releases (M2 developed I believe)
Strania
Panzer Dragoon Orta (if you don’t own it on disc)
Guwange (still the only port I think?)
Hard Corps: Uprising
Raiden Fighters: Aces (disc only?)

I’m looking at a ps3 game listing on ebay and it has “vintage” in the title :skull:

so while buying up the last of my wants from the XBLA store before it closed last week, i came to find out that my elite’s disc drive no longer reads games :sob:

im pretty sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble to just grab another system & redownload stuff, but i’m a bit paranoid since i have outrun and a few delisted games - i was reading you can’t just swap out disc drives, and replacing the laster seems a bit beyond my abilities. any thoughts on the easiest way of going about this in the year of our lord 2k24?

Send it to a modded to fix?

Yeah, I’d say sending to a modder would be the best approach.

Ben from iFixRetro installed my X-Station. He’s kind of part of the NYC crew with Jose Cruz and Bob from RetroRGB, when he lived in NYC. He also recapped my psx. He texted me photos during the process. Tons of pics on his twitter account. Side note, amazing timing from me as the PlayStation Mister core released like 2 months later, d’oh!

Christa from Sound Retro would be another good option. I haven’t had her do any work, but she’s worked on Jeremy Parish’s (Retronauts, et al) stuff (Ben also has) and works with Tim Rogers for Action Button content. That’s enough endorsement for me, lol. I was going to have her recap a PVM several years ago, but she stopped working on CRT’s for a bit. I’m not sure if she started up again on those or not.

Her website says pre-PS4/Xbox One, but her pinned tweet says pre-PS3, so obviously check prior.

Something I’m surprised to keep finding out people don’t know, all models of the PS3 are compatible with PS1 discs.

Along similar lines, Japanese ps3’s can sometimes be a better buy than a Japanese ps1 if you’re looking to play Japanese ps1 games. They’re BC with JPN ps1 games and open up some other AV connections via HDMI or component. Also region free for ps3 games.

Yep, I ditched my PAL PS3 because I was fed up of the forced 576i for anything with standard definition output except import PS3 software.

While that has paid off for 4:3 PS3 software I do still prefer playing PS1 games on PS1/2/Portable, if only for the native 240p output.

PS1 games on PS3 seem to add noticeable (but not ruinous) input latency to the controls, and the forced 480 lines doesn’t suit every game.
