PS3 / Xbox 360 Appreciation and Collecting Thread - Are They Retro Yet?

I just replaced the broken spring on a SIXAXIS R2 trigger. I used some old guitar string to make a new one. 11 or 12 gauge acoustic E string I think.

Works like a charm again.

No pics, cause it’s back together again, and it was a fiddly job.

continuing the trend of “what makes dubc feel old” lol

2 days ago “Vintage” ps1

today:

Checking wikipedia, the dates may not exactly line up, but pretty close.

I think part of what plays into it is that I bought a PS4 last November so it still seems new to me even though it’s almost 8(!) years old.

Crazy how much things evolved with games from Genesis to Xbox 360 in comparison to 360 to today. We were spoiled back then with a constant stream of totally new stuff.

Yeah I miss those days as well!

It must have been crazier before computers became mainstream as well. I grew up with computers but I can only imagine every new momentous release in the 80s and early 90s blowing minds and showing new possibilities or genres.

I’m hoping there’s a return to this with Playdate as developers figure out the hardware and how I get the most out of it.

It’s our only hope! :joy:

The one that gets me is the time between Doom → Quake 3 was 6 years!

Yeah, when you look at DOOM and Quake III Arena and consider how quickly we got there… it’s just wow. John Carmack is a genius. He wrote and rewrote the book on 3D games multiple times within a ten year span.

The gestation for big games really is longer than ever before. In the time it took Square Enix to crank out the (frankly unnecessary) Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 1, they released Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, Tactics, X, maybe X-2.

And it was detriment to the game, FFVIIR is so sanitised of any mechanics that aren’t crowd pleasers in a modern context that the unique appeal of the original game has arguably been lost. And it only covers the original game’s first five hours, stretching them to an uncomfortable forty. We’re probably a couple of decades away from seeing how this remake concludes. Madness!

hope this is the right thread…
so my replacement from sony (model 2) ps3 apparently died a while back, the red light that usually stays on when system is off was a bit intermittent, then gone. is this common?

wondering if i have the right power cable plugged in or something like that, it’s on a shelf with ps 1-5 so maybe i got it wrong?

What kind of cable does that PS3 take in general? I only have a super slim so I’m not familiar with any other PS3.

Dunno about overseas, but it takes a standard figure 8 cable here? Transformer is internal so it’s just two lines straight from mains.

Just disassembled my Backwards Compatible fat PS3 to replace the thermal paste only to realize I’m completely out of thermal paste.

I am clearly a genius.

MS mandated small patch sizes for most of the 360s early years. And you could only have a couple patches as well. It’s the reason hacking was so prevalent on some shooters

This kills most of my interest in modern games. Even some indie games are taking years from announcement to release these days, and that’s with the expectation of multiple patches after release. This doesn’t even include Early Access, which is great for some games as a sort of paid demo, but others seem to use it as a crutch for years.

The pandemic slowed a lot down, but this was trending up the last two generations.

I understand making games is hard and I’m certainly not saying games should be rushed or crunch should happen, but something is clearly holding games back years and years today and I’m sure makes the budget bloat. It is just hard to be excited when you see an announcement trailer and know the game shown is 2-3 years out on average.

So similar to my post in the OG Xbox thread I’ve also added more storage to both my PS3 and 360 and I’m looking for anything worthile you think I may be missing. Preferably things without PC ports and other sorts of exclusives. Collection here: Abwezi's Collection - LaunchBox Games Database

PS3:

Folklore
Heavenly Sword
Lair
Motorstorm Apocalypse
Resistance Trilogy
Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom

Lair especially is IMO very underrated. I played through it only recently and really enjoyed it. Patched version with regular controls, didn’t even try the Sixaxis control scheme. I wonder if all the terrible reviews were due to the original control scheme. Epic dragon flying mixed with some RTS elements, shame it bombing killed Factor 5.

Anyone else here have Soul Calibur on Xbox 360?

The game got delisted a couple months ago.

Weird thing is I can’t play it at all on my Xbox One X – I have it downloaded but it spits out errors like 0x82d40003 saying I need to sign in with the account that bought it (I am already) and after a console reset I get 0x803f8001 telling me I don’t own the game. And the game doesn’t show up on my “Full Library” download list so I’m afraid to try deleting it.

But the weirder part is the game still works on my Xbox 360 and still shows up in the download list there.

It’s almost like it got removed from back compat when it was delisted.

Except… they still advertise it as back compatible on 360:

Anyone else want to try the game on their XB1 or Series system?

I tried Microsoft support and got this escalated but I’m curious if anyone else is having the same issue.

I might have this. I’ll take a look when I have a chance.

Seems like this may be a problem in Canada only.

I noticed when logged in the Canadian web store looks like this:

And the American version of the same page looks like this:

Sure enough if I change my console’s region to USA I can play the game. :upside_down_face:
