It could be marketing lol
Not sure about NZ, but in Australia there is an insurance aggregator called ‘comparethemarket’ who have run a very successful marketing campaign by also running https://www.comparethemeerkat.com.au

I got bored tonight so I’m taking pictures of my PC CRT and cropping them.
The scanlines are still neatly resolved even when resized to 40p in height.

There may be something to do in that style (can you even do coloured text easily in MSDOS?)
pls fix the redirect
Never! tomorrow
Lol, that’s actually pretty clever.
I like the top, non cropped, one more. It was the same with the logo we currently have though where I really really like the glow on it and seeing more of the glow is
.
That being said, the bottom, cropped, one probably fits a banner more.
I’m also really liking the 2 text ones that @khaz has posted, don’t know if I would be able to decide between the colored one posted up further or the A prompt one. Or which version of each since they all have their appeal.
I like the feel of it - great use of color and font. But the actual layout is far too busy in my humble opinion. Logos need to be simple and clean.
I like the styling of the letters in the rgb. It definitely has a retro vibe^
Yeah, i totally agree. It’s a bit cluttery but i do like the font as well. I’m just having fun making these as it’s not something i usually do. I just happen to have the tools at work so i gave it a shot.
I’ve been lurking around the forum and this topic for a couple of days, pretty much love all of the logos and it made me wanna try something myself, just for fun. It’s kinda clean and minimalist, basically just a clean fat font with some color in there.
Hey I really dig this. Simple, Legibile at any size and the G is a throwback to pacman. Awesome!
This is my favorite so far. RGB/CMYK all present and represents our community without being an obvious CRT/AV logo. Nice throwback elements (Pac-Man, retro don’t but not too heavy handed I think). The 3-color variant works as an easily identifiable wordless symbol, and I think the same would be true of a single-color treatment. Can you try a black logo and a knockout version (white on black)?
Did you create the G or was it part of the font library? My only objection would be that the letters might need tweaking to make them unique to us, so that not just any person can download the font and recreate the logo in an instant.
Yeah, unfortunately (or luckily, depends on how how you look at it) that’s how the font looks like, wish I would’ve thought of it first.
The font itself is kinda perfect in its simplicity, but I agree that the logo is very easy to replicate. On the other hand, making very subtle changes to the font can potentially screw with the balance or just not be enough to distinguish it from the font itself. Another way to go is to add complexity to the logo, which again ruins the elegance somewhat, so I’m not sure what’s the best way to handle it.
Anyway, I made a bunch of variants and concepts, it might be kinda difficult to discern what works and what doesn’t with a larger list like this, but maybe it’ll give people some ideas and give suggestions on what looks better or worse. I jumbled all of these together, the numbers represent a group of logo variations, just to make it a bit easier to read.
I really, really like the lower right one in the first pic. Awesome stuff, ichtyander!
…and here comes another one from me. The spirte cut-outs are probably not allowed, tho.
I like the bottom ones with the lines, but really not sure how I feel about the secondary colors. The purple really stands out in particular in every version that has it.
edit: @Sublevel I also like that, but not sure how well it works as a logo. Just the words at the bottom of it are good for a logo though.
Another thing to consider, maybe, is the continuity between the two logos.
For example with my MSDOS prompt:
![]()
![]()
Going from the board to a thread, the title replaces the url neatly without changing the prompt.
You know what? Your idea would work perfectly if the DOS/scanline font could be integrated at a ‘code’ level. So - thinking out loud - you could get it to change colour according to the theme, and maybe even have the thread title at the top of the page written in the same way, as it was a proper DOS command (not sure this is what you meant).
Sure, it would be less ‘graphical/visual/distinctive’ than an actual logo, but hey… For me personally it’s not a big deal at all.
It was more meant as an example than anything else, for the people with actual talent to consider the idea of a two-part logo. Mine is just a crude photo of my CRT that I cropped and resized. It’s not even completely straight.
I’d like confirmation from @Peltz about the sizes of the logo.
Most of the logos presented can’t work because of the sizes limitations. imo one should show a big pretty logo, and a small resized logo of the correct dimensions, the one that would actually be used on the site. I trust the designer and their favourite resizing tool more than the auto-resize the forum does when uploading a big-ass picture to use as logo.
Yeah, I noticed that.
What I meant was just bringing up to the boards codehead’s attention a possible implementation of your idea, that I actually like alot.
Something along these lines (please forgive the completely different font… Couldn’t find the right one quickly enough):
^ Bigger size for the main page (homepage and at the very top of each thread)
^ Smaller size, which also incorporates the thread title itself (when you scroll down the page)
I mean, take it for what it is. I don’t even know if it’s technically doable.
