RGB High Score Battle! - Week 19 & 20: Action Fighter

Site is updated! Here’s our current week details:

WEEK 19 & 20
Game: Action Fighter
Platform(s): SMS
Challenge Type: High Score
Game Details: Full Game, High Score, No Continues
When: Apr 22nd - May 5th, 2019

I’ve updated the website with the new game, let’s get shooting!

Good luck everyone, please submit your scores via screenshot or video by replying directly to this post!

RULES

  1. Competitions last two weeks, close on Sunday night @ midnight.
  2. Post screenshots in this thread as proof.
  3. The winner from the previous week chooses the next game to play.
  4. You cannot choose twice in a row. 2nd place will choose if someone wins two weeks in a row.
  5. If there’s a tie, the person that submitted the high score first gets to choose.
  6. Games must be high score compatible (think “arcade style scores” like Pac-Man, or Spy Hunter, not Super Mario).
  7. Emulation is okay (MAME is often the best for high scores).
  8. No save state manipulation (pausing to take a break is fine though).
  9. Submit scores as soon as you get them! To keep the competition rolling and fair, do not hold on until the last moment to submit.

Points will be awarded for the entrants, based on the position finished for the week. This is to encourage wider participation, and the points will be posted each week as well as on the website.

POSITION POINTS AWARDED
1st: 10 points
2nd: 7 points
3rd: 5 points
4th: 3 points
5th: 2 points
Any honest attempt: 1 point

Overall, we should keep it simple. This is just a good time, not a crazy official high score competition! Game plays should ideally be short and fun so people that can’t invest hours into this can still compete. Obviously we are working on a trust based system here, so don’t ruin it for the others!

Here’s a simple website I made to keep track of the competition.

Obviously an answer to the Spy Hunter series by SEGA, this game actually plays much more like a shoot-em-up than a driving/action game. The items in the game can be a little confusing, and you may find yourself wondering what the power-ups do, and how you turn into a jet etc…

This will help: https://www.gamesdatabase.org/Media/SYSTEM/Sega_Master_System/Manual/formated/Action_Fighter_-1986-_Sega.pdf

Good luck everyone, I’m actually excited about this one.

Man this game is hard.

Maybe it is good that it gives you the first 999 seconds of each stage before you start to eat into your lives.
If you manage to get letter A through to F without dying you see a blue rocket fly by!

Anyway here is my first submission:

Managed to get to the boss of the second stage but not really worked out a way to beat those tanks.

Got to stage 3 but couldn’t reach the boss:

The helicopters are the pain in the backside to deal with and its so very hard to keep missiles to be able to take them out. Starting Stage 3 you get motorbikes with sidecars that shoot bullets at you…

It just gets harder and harder!

Oh man you were not kidding on the difficulty…

I gave the game a bit of a mess around for 15 minutes to try figure out how everything works before I reset and attempted 6 runs to fill up the ranking list:

Only on three attempts did I manage to get to the stage 2 boss, of which only one run did I manage to beat the boss and access stage 3.

Oh man this game is hard. I tried a bit last night and was not even able to get the top score LOL. But is it just me or is your hitbox actually larger than the car/plane mode itself? It seems like I die before the bullet actually touches me.

This is the best I can do right now, I am too frustrated to try for any higher LOL.

Site updated with the current scores.

I’m just biding my time until someone that’s exceptionally good at shoot-em-ups comes along and destroys our scores.

That would be pretty typical for the time this game was made. The hit box is likely around the outside of the entire sprite instead of a smaller one inside of the sprite. I am also guessing that since the hit-box is likely the same for all vehicles meaning that it would be based around the largest one and thus on the motorbike you can get hit from bullets that don’t even look like they have touched it yet.

I’d be happy with that and it would be very nice if we can get more active participants in these RGB High Score Battles!

I gave the arcade version a quick go on MAME which is very different and I can say for certain that the Master System version is the superior and easier game.

Agreed!

This is a tough one for me. I don’t own a Master System or the game. I have to go looking around for a way to play it. That’s why I haven’t participated.

Emulation is pretty easy! :stuck_out_tongue:

You can also play it on a Megadrive via a power base converter or everdrive.

Finally got the chance to play on the Master System and CRT instead of emulation, and it feels quite a bit nicer. Ended up dying on the 2nd boss this time around.

Nice score increase there @raskulous.

I’ve not used emulation in quite some time now as especially for older 8bit titles you can notice significant differences with input lag due to their more strict controls.

Not played Action Fighter since the last scores I posted so want to make some more time to do so. There is only 5 stages so would be interesting to see if any of us can get closer towards completion before the end of the competition period. Though with its difficulty probably unlikely.

Did a couple more attempts tonight, got to the third boss.

Two more attempts tonight, got to the third boss again, but couldn’t kill it.

New game will be Life Force on the NES! I’ll get the page updated, and put up the new thread up soon.

Became busy with work and several projects that I forgot to come back and give this another try.

Life Force sounds like a good next game and I have the US cartridge at hand!
