Composite is generated inside the PPU and output through a single pin on the chip. So it’s isn’t possible to tap into the inputs for it to make s-video.
You can NESRGB mod and then you’ll get s-video, but it’s s-video encoded from RGB not using the same techniques as the NES PPU uses.
Only other thing I’m aware of is the Analogue NT mini which does composite as accurately as possible based on decades of reverse engineering and documentation does s-video color in the same NTSC color space as composite and would be the cleanest possible video while still having accurately generated color.
It would be kinda cool if something like that was made as a mod for NES but the modding+AV community seems to just not care about s-video any more.
The pc engine fan magazine is a very late issue, so it mostly covers racy pc-fx visual novels ( ), but there’s some coverage of langrisser and other rpgs. If I can’t find any photos or scans of any issues online I might have to make some.
I’m actually looking for the knock off PC Engine shuttle. There are two different ones out there. One better than the other. One of them has compatability issues.
Thanks for the Goo Gone recommendations, going to seek out a bottle! My Kororinpa disc also had a sticker on it (thanks retailer GAME), which made a loud noise in the slot loading Wii/Wii U drives. Peeling it off left a lot of sticker gunk…
Couple more pick-ups! I only had God Hand on PS3’s PS2 Classics, having foolishly ignored it on release. The input lag introduced via emulation was noticeable and not ideal, and the upscaling hampered the image quality. It’ll be good to play it natively and hopefully get further than I managed there!
It feels weird rebuying Order of Ecclesia a decade after I originally picked it up, but for over three times the price I paid back then. In hindsight I shouldn’t have shifted my copy but I was never a huge fan of the game. So I wonder if my view will change on it given how impressed I’ve been with Portrait of Ruin.
One thing I am reminded of here is the stellar treatment Konami Europe gave to its releases in the mid-2000s. DS and PSP games routinely received inside cover art, and manuals continued their tradition of being full colour, and multi-language, often with a poster in the middle, or a separate poster included. GBA game manuals were often thick enough to warrant being bound with a spine instead of staples too. Good times…
I never played Godhand but Order of Ecclesia is a gem. I found that it actually nodded a bit to the older style of Castlevania games with its difficulty. Especially in the boss fights. Once I figured that out I was able to really appreciate it in a different way. It feels like a mix between Simon’s Quest and Symphony.
Got a good deal on the sweet looking DMG style Game Boy Pocket from Japan. I really like the larger screen of the pocket compared to the slightly smaller screen of the color. It’s the perfect compromise for scratching the nostalgic itch of playing on monochrome hardware. As an added bonus, the system came with Shiren the Wanderer, which is great, and X, which has some awesome 3d graphics for the time.
I just grabbed a pro 2 weeks ago too! Got fed up with my launch unit’s fan noise, turning off/on by itself (sometimes while playing!), and some HDMI handshake issues with the PSVR processing unit.
So far, it runs very silently and doesn’t turn off by itself. Thank goodness.
Transfer wasn’t as easy as Xbox S to X but man it made a huge difference. It seems I can get $225-275 for this from 3rd parties or I can get $200 cash at GameStop
I like the portability of the pocket versus the OG brick, also the screen is easier to see than the original. It doesn’t have quite as much motion blur.
It’s been a month or so since I made a pick up post, and with the recent TV acquisition, now is as good a time as any I suppose. I found it on a local buy and sell site (kijiji) after searching daily for well over a year, so suffice to say, in pretty pumped about it. It was $25.
Most of these games are cheap pawn shop or kijiji finds, anywhere from a few bucks to fifteen or so. Odyssey and Mario Maker were full retail of course, and Link Faces of Evil was $100. I want to resell that one.
My new job has me spending quite a bit of time at Bioware in Edmonton here, and my first day on the job I visited their internal store and bought Unravel Two for really cheap. It was a very cool experience to see their office.
Some more pickups to wrap up the week. Always wanted to play Clannad - it’ll almost be like coming home. I watched both seasons of Kyoto Animation’s excellent anime adaptation over a decade ago.
Will be posting more about Air Traffic Controller over at the DS thread, but I’m glad a publisher brought Sonic Powered’s long running series overseas.
