RGB Pick Up Thread Of Swag!

Congrats and excellent work restoring the cabinet. Bonus points for replacing the bat tops with proper ball tops on the sticks!

Hey what type of paint and/or painting process do you use? I like the shine you’ve gotten out of that cab. Looks great

Oh no I didn’t restore it, paid someone to do it. Don’t have the time or know-how to do it!

Control panel is new though, put in all new Seimitsu levers and push buttons I bought in Japan last March.

I didn’t restore it myself, the man I bought the cab from did all the work to restore it. Poor cab was gutted for a MAME cab, so he had to disassemble the cab, clean and polish the metal, I believe he used automotive paint for it, fully rewired it JAMMA spec. Love how it ended up.

Oddball pickup but super important…

I’ve been having reset issues with my Genesis CDX for awhile now and thanks to internet posts and a video on YouTube showing the way to replace capacitors in the power wart I became convinced that was my likely issue.

I ordered the above from Retrogamecave.com last week and it arrived today! I’m excited to try it out and see if the issue is solved. It’s a pricey replacement but for a pricey system I think it was justified while I’m stuck at home furloughed.

Was it resetting on its own randomly? I’m having this problem with mine. I replaced the psu also, but it still resets randomly. Not sure what the fix should be at this point.

Yes. I’d be playing and it would just blip and reset. I haven’t had a chance to use it yet but if it continues then it’s possibly a fuse in there that’s getting tripped due to heat I think.

Here’s the video on the power supply issue…

I did a Goog search on “Genesis CDX resets randomly” and found some talk about the fuse but I really think it’s power. One thing to be aware of is that you must have the right PSU. 9.5V and 1.5A. It’s different from other Sega systems.

Well, turns out it wasn’t the power supply. I’m still getting random resets. :weary:

Sigh… it must be something internal causing it to reset? It’s soooo frustrating.

Ah that sucks… I haven’t been able to use my CDX for a couple years because of this, and have not found a solution. At least I know I’m not alone with this problem now though. I don’t remember there being a fuse the last time I was inside there, but I have a pretty bad memory. I wonder if recapping the power board inside would fix?

I know the hardware is different but the fuse inside a Model 1 Sega CD doesn’t even look like what you usually think of as a fuse. It looks more like a resistor. Looks like this. May be worth looking at the board to see if it has something similar.

Edit: On their site it says this is for use in a CDX as well. Could be a $.50 fix for you.

Nice, thanks for that! I’m guessing it’s a resettable fuse then? So the fuse blows and maybe that causes the console to reset. Would be a cheap fix for sure if that’s it.

Could be, usually if a fuse has blown your console will just be dead. But if it is failing just from being old it could potentially start intermittently cutting in and out.

You need basic soldering gear to fix this. Desoldering braid and a soldering iron. A solder sucker will make the job much easier.

That’s why I’m guessing it’s a resettable fuse because the console only resets, it doesn’t shut down. Then again, I would think you’d have to power the console off to reset the fuse. The only fix I ever found for this particular CDX issue was to replace the psu, which I did but that didn’t fix. I basically shelved it after that.

I have soldering gear actually, I do mods and fixes all the time. I just put the CDX aside for all my other projects with the idea that I’d revisit it later. I don’t really need a CDX since I have multiple Gennys. I just think it looks cool and wanted it in my setup. I have a mister now also, which has an excellent sega cd core, but I still want the CDX in my setup anyway heh, so I’d love to find a fix for it.

Yeah, that fuse is one possibility as is a complete recapping, which I’m definitely not capable of doing and from what I’ve read is one of the more extensive jobs for people to do to get a CDX working like new again.

That said, from what I’ve read today it seems like that is almost always a good fix. Sigh.

Brought home an HD CRT today! It definitely needs some adjustments but I’m excited to get my hands dirty with it. It was a beast to lug down my basement steps.

@DaveLong, @panopticblue I have a CDX with a faulty laser that I have to replace since forever. If any of you guys have replaced the laser and know trusted sellers, let me know.

Wanting to avoid Aliexpress for now.

Picked up the xenosaga guides for around $10 each.

Gotta give the sega cd a good cleaning and test. Got it for pretty cheap. Haven’t owned one in years.

Does that take 480p widescreen natively? If so, you got yourself the ultimate Wii/OG Xbox/GCN display. It’s really hard to play those games in native widescreen resolutions without letterboxing or scaling.

Yep! 480p, 480i, and 1080i were listed for n the CNET site. Weirdly 720p wasn’t listed as native. I’ll have to do some more digging.
