So after over three wonderful years together I parted with my beloved Sony PVM 20L2. My partner and I just had our first child so the monitor was languishing in the cupboard - too large and heavy to easily bring out and set up.
I decided to put the feelers out on CRT group on FB and see if anyone was interested in a trade for a smaller monitor (preferably multiformat).
Enter my second child - the JVC DTV 1710CG
Manufactured in 2008 this gorgeous monitor accepts RGB/YpbPr and HD SDI and can output up to 1080i with its sharp 800 TVL flat aperture grille tube. The only downside is the tinted anti glare coating was removed by the previous owner (it was damaged beyond repair) so unless you view it in a dark room the blacks are a bit grey.
I plan to use this for a nice neat and tidy MiSTer and Analogue Pocket setup.
need to see this beauty in the scanlines thread
Will do! I only had enough time to test that it was working but will properly put it through its paces on the weekend.
It’s picky with sync but I’ve had better results with RGBHV. I was surprised to find the Analogue DAC can output RGBHV provided you change the settings on the console you’re using.
I picked up a beat up Extron rx109 cheap so if I have any issues I should be able to use it to work out any kinks in the sync signal.
Hmm, tempted to now…
You might want to apply a tint film on your tube.
John Linneman did the same on one of his CRT’s, and the results were great.
Here’s the X post he made about it.

He also talks about the process and the results in this podcast.
You read my mind actually, shortly after receiving the monitor I went right down the rabbit hole. I’ve ordered some VLT35 and VLT50 film so I can do some test strips.
Looks like a finicky but otherwise straightforward process so I’ll be sure to post my results here.
New PCB day is best day.
And boy am I glad to get this one for much less than what it goes for these days on PCB shops at Japan or Forums. Think I’m good with these two (1 and 2), don’t think I’ll ever get TGM3 as I don’t think my setup is ideal for Taito Type X hardware.
Time is almost up, but I thought I’d quickly note that if you order before 6PM today (Japan Time) with Suruga-ya you’ll get free shipping. This is a fairly significant savings. I just ordered some PC Engine stuff. They only do this like once or twice a year I think?
They’ve been doing it nearly every weekend for a few months now, with the occasional skip. While free shipping is cool, they bumped up the prices of everything to compensate, so if you’re the type to order more than a few items at a time, you’re probably worse off than before they started the campaign. The bumped prices don’t adjust down during the week when free shipping isn’t active, so definitely worth waiting it out unless you’re concerned that the item you want will sell out.
Still some good prices to be had compared to buying locally, but not the treasure trove of discount it was before.
That’s interesting. I hadn’t seen one of these sales before. I also thought the prices were still less than I can get through ebay, which is the only other option I’ve used in the last four or five years. When I do find PC Engine stuff in the States (or TG-16) locally, it’s always at least ebay or more. There are zero deals nearby unfortunately.
Just a few examples of what I purchased that definitely seemed like deals…
Gunhed - $39
Ebay prices start at $62 with no box or manual.
I got Super Star Soldier no box or manual for $29
Ebay prices start around $36
Alien Crush with no box or manual $18
Starts around $34 on ebay.
Obviously the SSS wasn’t a big savings, but the others were pretty good. I’ll be sure to look more closely when I order in the future though. I’ve ordered from them twice now.
Also, I just went back to my last order with them and looked at their current price for stuff I bought on that order (in 2022) and yeah, it’s higher, but I also checked ebay on some of those and they’re still good deals, just not as good as before, but with free shipping they’re definitely the better option.
One last edit… that 2022 order was 6587 Yen to ship it. $45 in today’s $$. Not cheap.
No new PCB today ;(
But I did get this beast of a cabinet, glad to add another Astro City to the collection. Would gladly trade that Aero for another Astro, as much as I love the Aero, maintenance is just more trouble than it’s worth, plus it weighs a ton.
so cool! love the posters too
I’ve bought absolutely heaps of new vintage games over the last little bit, may post some soon.
This was a craze new release however. 19 years later…
finally got my Radiant Silvergun steelbook. never thought I’d own it and Ikaruga, so God bless the Nintendo Switch
I’ve got a standard coming.
Owned both those games at one point on Saturn/GameCube but sold long ago due to their high value. Yeah Switch is slowly becoming the shooter goat. A few more Cave releases and it will get there.
I got a nice copy of Cotton 100% for the set.
The NGPC game is a counterfeit, but I kept it because it’s the only way to play it.
Might get one of those licensed repros of Panorama, the original is impossible. It would be great to get a licenced repro of the NGPC game too.
