Sega Dreamcast |OT| It's Still Thinking

None I know of. I’ve been doing that since day one. My DC is USA but most of my games are PAL, some NTSC-U and some NTSC-J.

Excellent, thanks.

I have Japanese, PAL, and NA saves on the same VMU without any issues.

Think I’m going to mod, or have modded, my DC (or spare DC?) as a Christmas present to myself.

  • PSU
  • FAN
  • Overclock
  • GDEMU
  • internal VGA mod?

Any recommendations for UK modders or suppliers?

There’s some on-going debate as to whether or not a replacement PSU is really needed, but the only one I’d recommend is the one from Beharbros. Not UK based, unfortunately, but I wouldn’t take my chances with something else.

For fans, it’s the Noctua NF-A4x10 (5v version). Here’s a UK supplier that has everything you need in a kit:

For GDEMU, I’d just get a clone off ebay.

Sweet I’ll just do the fan, GDEMU and Overclock and see how that goes.

Why not a USB-GDROM?

Ease of ordering and price.

Anyway, I just ordered:

  • Fan kit
  • GDEMU mount kit
  • GDEMU clone
  • rechargeable CMOS battery
  • some 10K 0603 resistors for the easy 10% overclock

Does the 10% overclock actually give you higher FPS in games, or what does it do?

It runs the CPU higher than the default 200MHz.

The easy 10% Overclock takes you to 220MHz. More complicated mods go to 240MHz (20% Overclock) or 270MHz (35% Overclock).

I guess it depends how much a game uses the CPU as to whether it will benefit. Loading times will be shorter, at least.

I’m doing it in the hope that Super Runabout will benefit.

Apparently it’s also possible to Overclock the GPU, but I’d need to read more on that.

Which mount kit did you buy? I would eventually like to get one to avoid finger yoga to get the card in and out, lol. Also less stress on the connection in the long run.

How much do GDEMU (or clones) go for? I bought a second Dreamcast since my original had a broken pin which was important for VGA output (think it was red) but the new one had a dodgy drive. I swapped the drives and it seems ok but maybe a GDEMU is better for the long run.

Checking my ebay history, I paid $63.85 a year ago for my clone. I think the original creator stopped selling them after clones hit the market which is unfortunate for multiple reasons. I would have bought from him, but it wasn’t an available option.

I would have also bought an original, but it was pretty much impossible and I needed a drive replacement ASAP. If he’d put up a waiting list, I’d gladly sign up and wait for one to become available. But the system he’s using is just incredibly frustrating.

Looks like the last open window for orders was Aug 29, so maybe he’s still selling them?

This one: GDEMU SD Mount Kit for Sega Dreamcast - Holder & SD extender SD to DC - 3D Print | eBay

I bought everything (except the GDEMU) from Kaico UK, who let you save a bit through automatically accepted Best Offers.

I paid £32.67 - with free shipping - which I find almost unbelievably low.

I just did eBay search, low price sort, ships from UK, and picked a seller with lots of good feedback.

I bought a cheap $8 SCART cable from Console5 for my Dreamcast, and it’s absolute trash (as to be expected, I guess). It has dark black outlines on all the text and graphics, and it’s just a complete waste of money.

To come to their defence, they are offering me a refund… so kudos to them!

So, I started researching a little more before spending the $80 CAD on a retrogamingcables solution. I found out about this from Bob from retroRGB. He mentioned it in his dreamcast video. Supposedly it will output 240p/480i nicely. Does anyone have experience with it that can chime in?

I’m using it on a SD CRT only. Dreamcast → Extron switch → Shinybow SB-1840 → SD CRT

I have the RGC cable. Looks good and works well. But the big selling point is 480p + 480i/240p for games that don’t like running in progressive VGA mode.

Are you just using a regular CRT? If so, and you don’t need 480p, a cheap s-video cable would do everything you want and look great.

Yeah, just a regular CRT, no 480p. I’m not really concerned about the few games that don’t like 240p/480i.

I would really like to go to SCART if possible, as this and the Gamecube are the last consoles to hook up. Everything I have is on either component or SCART.

My Extron looks a little rediculous at the back lol!

I imagine Bob’s a reliable source of information. I say, for that price, you may as well give it a shot
