Sega Dreamcast |OT| It's Still Thinking

The top two VGA cables are the Retro Access and RGC cables, Retro Access one uses a method that is better at keeping the correct RGB levels (full attenuator networks iirc) but the RGC cable also makes an attempt at correcting the DC putting out ‘hot RGB’ with 10ohm resistors. I believe every other VGA solution will be slightly blown out (can be corrected with OSSC and the pre-ADC or you can add 10ohm resistors to the RGB lines as the RGC cable does)

I wouldn’t really recommend the Behar stuff, the connector on their box isn’t great sadly also Digital Foundry found a colour tint on the output of the Toro VGA box. Might have just been a one-off issue though

just some anecdotal experience, I’ve had a SCART cable for the Saturn from RGC crap out on me in less than a year (the colors get all wonky until you fiddled with the wire and was getting progressively worse with time)

I also got SCART cable for the DC from Retro Access and seems a lot better built (and the 15/31khz switch is great), though to be fair I haven’t had as much time with it as I’ve since ironically switched to $10 Retrobit s-video cables for both consoles lol

I got a Dreamcast again a while ago. Basic white one, looking into replacement shells to have something more fun.

I was going to pop in a GDEmu, but I think I’ll wait for something like the Saturn Switcher, allowing discs and ODE to be used in the same console.

iirc @Suteneko has been disappointed by RGC cables so you’re not alone. I would say the RA cable is definitely the best out of the two but thought it worth mentioning the RGC one if you can’t solder on those resistors or shipping is easier.

I actually have a couple of RGC cables but I haven’t spent enough time with them to know if they’re any good, I was still fixing jail bars on the system iirc and never got around to testing things like the audio output on it (dreaded white screen buzz).

Btw does anybody have the official Sega Dreamcast Scart? I read some random post about the audio on it being bad

I have the official SCART but it’s in storage cos these days I use VGA. Back in the day I never noticed anything odd about the sound.

Interesting, I can’t remember where I read that but glad yours is working okay

I actually do have the official DC SCART cable but haven’t used it in like… 5 years (holy moly time flies). I’m not even sure where it is at this point since I use a Toro box (which is still not the best, but gets the job done).

If it’s any consolation, I do not remember there being any audio issues with it. Overall, I was happy with it for 480i/240p output. But take that with a grain of salt. I am only using standard stereo bookshelf speakers and am not a major sound enthusiast. Plus, it was another lifetime ago.

But yea, I thought it worked perfectly at the time.

That’s exactly what I want it for, output to some bookshelf speakers. I’ve been going down the ‘audio rabbit hole’ recently. It’s funny when I was looking for new magnetically shielded speakers I came across your AVS forum topic! I’ll probably make a thread here on that when I have some time. (Also want to ask for recommendations for RCA breakouts for Scart cables that don’t have them, the one I have has grounding issues, same goes for my Scart switcher)

Thanks for your input everyone!

Funnily enough I already have the RGC Scart cable as that’s how my DC is currently hooked up to my PVM 20L2. I’ve had issues with the quality of their cables 3 or 4 times now but each time they have shipped me a replacement to Australia without me even sending so much as a photograph.

Anyway, my cheap DC VGA cable arrived but I’m still waiting on the gender changer (the IBME74 has a built in VGA cable) will be interesting to see how it holds up.

Speaking of cables, has anyone used (or seen any reviews) of this DC component cable from Retro Gaming Cables? I pretty much gave up completely on the HD Retrovision ones, but then saw these mentioned in a Reddit post recently. Seems like it came out of nowhere.

I’ve seen a few people on Reddit and Twitter with them but unfortunately nobody has done reviews or even impressions of the cable.

A new Cosmic Smash is coming to PSVR2. Suddenly, PSVR2 went from a “we’ll see” sort of thing for me to a “must buy” just for that. I really hope they release a modern port of the original game too - it’s something that deserves an HD release with functional online leaderboards.

I’m certain they couldn’t charge much for it though considering how barebones it is. Still… it would be awesome.

I have those! Is there anything you need to know in particular?

Just looking for general impressions, how you have it set up, any noticeable improvements, etc. I’m currently using an s-video cable connected to a CRT TV and it generally looks OK, but have the option to use component and have been waiting for a decent option for ages.

I haven’t used component, but I’ve used DC SCART cables from Retro Access and honestly, s-video on a CRT isn’t all that far off in my experience

It works as advertised: The default 480p/31khz mode displays the VGA signal over component while the 15khz mode lets you play the relatively small number of VGA-unfriendly games. The VGA signal is sharp and a massive improvement over s-video, but I’ve only ever used it on a flat panel.

VGA mode looks great wheter it’s plugged directly to the TV* or in my retrotink 5x. 15khz mode has some smearing and distortion on the SEGA copyright screen when plugged into the TV or my old retrotink 2x pro but looks perfect on the 5x.

*I use it on a fairly recent 4K Samsung TV: their product page is rather insistent that VGA mode won’t work in component on a consumer CRT set so if you’re playing on a CRT idk.

One weird thing is that the resolution switch can be in a halfway position where neither video mode works.

Okay, I have a question as someone who never owned a DC.

Do all PAL games that natively support VGA/480p mode run at 60hz or are there games that run at 50hz in VGA mode?

I believe PAL games that natively have VGA all run at 60hz. Don’t think I’ve heard of any native PAL VGA 50hz-only titles, would like to hear if someone knows to the contrary!

OH MY WORD!

this is such HUGE news!

cannot wait to play it in VGA.
