I am just getting started with the Genesis and i bought a few games. I have Revenge of Shinobi, Ghouls n Ghosts, and Strider. Which one do you think I should start with? I kinda have decision paralysis.
Don’t hesitate, take Thunder Force 3 |B
Other favorites:
Thunder Force 4
Sonic 1
Rolling Thunder 2
Alisia Dragoon
Elemental Master
Thank you! I might pick up Thunder force 4
Of those, I would play Strider first because it’s a great arcade port and it makes you appreciate how solid the Genesis was early on. Ghouls N Ghosts is tough as nails (obviously) and then Shinobi is 100% classic, although I prefer Shinobi III myself.
Thanks!
lol it seems I read the question too fast.
I was kinda confused but thats ok! I ordered Thunder Force 4 and Rocket Knight Adventures. Do you think Rocket Knight Adventures would be a good starter game?
I don’t know, I never played this game.
If by a good starting game you mean a game not too harsh, in your list I would say that Revenge of Shinobi seems less ruthless than the two others pure arcade games, but I didn’t play those two conversions.
Shinobi 3 and Streets of Rage 2 are great games that hold up very good today. Both have a fantastic soundtrack as well.
Thanks for the help! I was looking at those.
Hey all!
I started playing Rocket Knight Adventures, that game is so fun! Everything about it is awesome! The art, the music, the gameplay, all great. It might be one of my top retro games now! Does anyone else like this game?
It’s definitely in my top 20 Sega Genesis games. The technical brilliance on display in that game while at the same time presenting a ton of awesome gameplay makes it one of the system’s very best. It’s inventive, colorful, exciting, and just plain silly fun at times. It’s one of those games that defines for me what 16-bit games should be.
Hey all!
I was taking apart mu genesis, and I saw this resistor. What does it do? Should I remove it? It’s obviously not original.
What model is it? Specifically what board revision?
Sega did bodge fixes on boards sometimes, I have several Sega consoles with hand fixes on the motherboards. My VA0 Mega Drive has a whole daughterboard added.
Yep looks like that was a factory fix for a fault on a certain revision
From an old Assembler games post (RIP Assembler)
“The 220ohm resistor on the MC68000 pin 6 (/AS) is meant to prevent the console from crashing under certain circumstances. If it has that factory patch, it’s using a FH0001 chip as VDP instead of the “classic” YM7101 VDP. Apparently sometime around 1992 Yamaha re-designed the VDP chip and it had that errata. MD consoles with a Hitachi 68000 and the FH0001 VDP will not have the resistor (also there’s a trace cut under the 68000 and a black jumper at the other side of the board). Without these “erratas” fixed the console will crash a lot.).”
Thank you so much! I have an early model 1. If you would like more model info just let me know! I can’t open my Genesis right now because I’m not at home. I should leave the resistor in if it helps prevent crashes, right?
I have one of those Mega Drive versions. Was very surprised when I saw it as no hardware mid guide has ever mentioned it.
Yes you need to leave the resistor, it is a factory mod. It’s as original.
I found assembler about 6 months before it shut down
Thanks for the clarification! This forum is actually so helpful! I don’t know what I would do without it!
