The Sunday Night Shmup thread

Seriously, they pushed it back again too, now to April. Not really sure what is taking them so long to get that out the door.

Yeah I have no idea. First and last time I order from them.

Does this mean that every Switch english version (Limited Edition and regular) has all of the games? Or do you still need the limited edition to get all of the ones released so far?

Edit: Has it come out in North America yet?

The Strictly Limited version hasn’t released yet. I don’t know whether or not the digital release has happened yet, but I suspect it won’t be until the physical ships, or possibly after.

No there are two versions for the US, the Arcade Collection (same as the none limited edition Japanese version) and Console Collection (which includes the console games that the Japanese limited edition had), there is a limited edition that I believe includes both. Though I’m not sure if that limited edition has them on one cart like the Japanese limited edition did. If I remember right the limited edition and regular editions in Japan are two different executables.

Only the limited JPN editions for sure get the extra console games, not sure if the NA “console editions” will get them as well.

I could be wrong but I could have sworn they said it was coming to the US stuff as well. I guess we’ll find out if SLG ever ships the fucking things.

I may need to learn to be more patient. This will be the second time on the Switch where I’ll have part one of a shmup collection as the Japanese release and part 2 as the US. I have the Japanese Psikyo Shooting thing from the Japanese release and then bought the US version of 2 and have the Japanese Darius Arcade release and bought the US console release.

I started playing Zed Blade on Neo Geo via the Arcade Archives series on Switch on Sunday night. I hadn’t played it before but was digging it. It’s got that perfect simplicity of systems along with some great tunes and solid action and graphics. Made the top 100 on the leaderboard but know I can do better. Good times.

Video Games NY is a software publisher now? Or are they unaffiliated?

It’s bizarre if so. I’ve been to that place a few times. It’s sort of a hole in the wall.

For those with a PC, these three are all available on Steam for $5 USD each. There’s also a 7 game bundle for $30 CAD, but it’s been as cheap as $15.

Preordered my copy yesterday. Looking forward to digging into some AstroPort games.

Honestly I have no idea if they’re connected or not, never looked in it.

I’ve been playing a whole bunch of Ketsui on PS4 the last couple of days. I had a fantastic (well for me) run to kick it off hitting 43mil. Which I know is nothing compared to the big scorers. Then today I only did 17mil, then 15mil, then 12. I have completely collapsed and I don’t know what I was doing differently that made such a big difference in scores.

I’m going to have to give that a try this week. So last week with the announcement of DDP SDOJ getting an Exa release, some folks on other forums mentioned that you could still buy it digitally on the Xbox Japanese store for just 25 bucks and it was region free there too. So last week I finally set up a Japanese Xbox account, and the first thing I did was finally redeem the DLC I got with Mushihimesama Futari when it came out. Surprisingly 11 years later the code still worked. I also bought a Yen card from Solaris Japan, which after jumping through some hoops to get my account verified, I finally got the points today.

Been playing it for the last 2 hours or so. I really wish I hadn’t missed this release, and the Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets release, when they first came out. I think I was under the impression that they had stopped making them region free so it wouldn’t work on my 360. Anyway it’s awesome to finally have it and not have paid 200+ bucks for it.

I’m digging it, its hard as balls but its also really enjoyable. Though the look feels so, not DoDonPachi to me. At first I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but then it hit me, the game feels too clean. I don’t know if this will make sense to others but it feels like the pixel art is too smooth overall. It’s like it lacks the edge and roughness I kind of associate with the series.

That said though I’m enjoying the different versions on here, and I’m trying to figure out what ship set up works best for me in it.

I BELIEVE Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets is also region free digitally, and MAYBE Mushihimesama HD as well? They’re all just 25 bucks, so it might be time to get a bigger yen card for the account and buy some more.

I really wish I had them physical but I’m happy to at least get to play them.

Got my Space Invaders collection in the mail yesterday. I’ll post some more detailed impressions later, but I did play a few rounds of each game last night. It’s a solid collection, if not a little bare bones compared to the Darius collections. For instance, there aren’t any original marquees or bezels that display, unlike in Darius where you could display the original art. Also theres a download code for Arkanoid vs Space Invaders, as it’s not on the cart. I didnt mess around with it yet, but it appears to be in tate mode with touch controls only.
I did play a lot of Space Invaders Gigamax with my wife, that game is awesome. Cant wait to get 4 players playing it simultaneously. Overall I’m happy with this collection, just wish it had a few more bells and whistles.

What would be a good shmup to start with? I’ve never really gotten into the genre and will a bit more time at home I’m eager to start.

I’ve got access to a SFC, MD, PS1, N64 and PS2.

Basically I’d like a challenge but nothing soul-crushing for my first game.

For sfc I’d recommend Gradius 3, it’s easier than the arcade version but still challenging. It’s got some slowdown but that might help you get acclimated to dodging bullets.

For md I’d recommend Sagaia, also known as Darius 2. The Darius series is one of my favorites, they can be tough games but I really enjoy them. Shooting giant robotic fish never gets old.

For ps1 I’d recommend Raystorm. It’s a vertical scrolling shooter, whereas the other games I recommended are side scrollers. Raystorm let’s you shoot in front of you and also allows you to lock on to ground targets ala Xevious.

And dont be afraid to lower the difficulty in any shmup, they’re supposed to be fun and not frustrating. Play how you want, with practice you’ll find your skills will improve with repeated play. Good shmups teach memorization and pattern recognition, and once you’ve mastered that you’ll really enjoy them.

I got my copy of the Space invaders collection in today but haven’t had a chance to play it at all yet.

For Listai, I find it a hard thing to recommend someone their first shmup. I think it’s a more diverse genre than just putting all those games under shmups makes it seem. If that makes sense.

I don’t know if this question is ok on the board but are you planning to buy some or just trying roms on everdrives/burning cdrs? I know it may seem like a dumb question but if you’re someone that only plays real carts and say we recommend Gleylancer on the MD, that’s a few hundred bucks. (it is phenomenal though and I highly recommend playing it, just don’t get the official repro like I did. It’s got build issues but I’m a weak consumer don’t be like me, just play the rom.)

I’ll say GD’s suggestions are good and it does help to try a variety of types to try and see what you like. I’ll also add on the PS1 side DonPachi, and DoDonPachi to introduce you to bullet hell shooters. I’d also say any of the Raiden games, though the SFC and MD ports of Raiden are just so so, and the PS1 Ports are the ones to play either Raiden Project or Raiden DX. There’s also Raiden III on PS2 but I think the first 2 games in the series are better.

N64 doesn’t have much but it can introduce you to onrail shooters like Star Fox 64, and Sin and Punishment.

And yeah I’ll second what GD said, don’t be afraid to lower the difficult, the main thing is to have fun with the games.
