The Sunday Night Shmup thread

Thanks for the suggestions! - I think I’ll give Gradius 3 a whirl this afternoon.

There’s actually a patch to remove the slowdown of SNES Gradius 3 even on a real system.

I’ve heard of that but havent tried it yet. For some reason I thought I read that the patch makes the game crash after a certain stage, making it impossible to clear. But I could be wrong.

Well, there’s a full playthrough on Youtube using that patch so the game is definitely beatable with it.

The patch definitely works, but it makes the game so much more difficult. That is one game that benefits from the slowdown lol IMHO.

You need either an SD2SNES or err what is it called now the FX Pack, or to hack an SA-1 game to play it with the patch on real hardware.

I’ve got an sd2snes, I’ll have to check it out.

I’m quite new to playing shmups too. What do you guys think of Strikers 1945 ? I’ve been playing the first 2 on the PS2 on ‘easy’, so far I can get to the 5th stage on one credit. Compared to other shmups I think they are quite basic so good candidates to start out with ?

I’m pretty new too and Strikers 1945 (and DonPachi) are my two most played games. I really like the random order of the first four levels thing on Psikyo’s games, it’s such a small thing but keeps them feeling fresh even after countless game overs.

I used to play DonPachi on and off a few years ago I really liked it but it soon for pretty hard ! Another I like is Batsugen, it’s quite easy going.

I think the Strikers games are good to start with. If you like those I’d also recommend Aero Fighters 2 on Neo Geo. It was developed by the same people, they were known then as Video System before they became Psikyo. Also one of the pilots is a dolphin.

The Strikers 1945 games are a great freaking series. I love them, and we FINALLY got a home port of Strikers 1945 III on Switch thanks to the ACA line (Arcade Archives). I dig Psikyo’s stuff but I do think the Strikers 1945 series are their best works.

I’m glad some others like them as well, it’s a shame because I never hear anyone taking about them.

I just got a patched SA-1 ROM repro cart in the mail a few days ago. I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but I’ll probably do so on a stream, and get destroyed over and over in stage 2, for maximum audience enjoyment

A word of warning on RayStorm - great game, but if you’re starting with the US PlayStation version, be aware that Working Designs upped the difficulty of that version. The original arcade release, and the Japanese PS1 release, as well as the Saturn version (known as Layer Section II) aren’t as difficult.

The physical release of Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets is region free, as well, fwiw. I realize it’s expensive these days, but it’s an option.

Good point, I forgot about that. I think the Taito Memories version on ps2 is closer to the arcade in terms of difficulty.

Oh wow, really? I had no idea about that for Raystorm, I’ll keep that in mind.

Well, Raystorm is also on Xbox 360 for 15 bucks so I should go for that instead.

You should get Galactic Attack on Saturn instead. First game in the series and IMHO the better game.

Why not both?=p
