The Sunday Night Shmup thread

They’re not bad but I really don’t like their scaling options and scanline filters. Everything looks far too soft when enabling them.

It’s true. Every MVS game I know of has the AES version on the same cart. I can access them both on Unibios. They’re the same ROM as far as I know.

It’s been years since I owned an AES, but back then I thought AES only limited you to 4 credits per side, this was before unibios was a thing. Maybe that’s why those modes weren’t enabled?

I thought it depended on the game. I don’t have my system where I’m spending the lockdown so I can’t check right now.

Thanks for your thoughts guys, at the very least you have given me some confidence about buying some of them :grinning:

I seem to remember one of the launch Metal Slug games being patched because it ran at the wrong speed (either two much or two little slowdown) but they patched it which was good.

The worldwide leaderboards and caravan mode inclusion are really good fun, worth picking up some of the games for alone, like Road Fighter becomes a lot more fun that way.

My only niggle is the input latency on some of the games, at least on Switch. Going from Saturn Magical Drop 3 to Switch ACA and it was a night and day difference, the game just couldn’t keep up with my fast inputs.

I was thinking about getting some for my Xbox One, anyone have any on Xbox ?

Thunder Force AC is coming soon, I’m excited for it. Anyone else looking forward to it?

I sure am, I’m actually trying to get more into Thunder Force now.

I’m definitely getting it, TF IV Ages was superb and I need some TF III in my Switch library. Are there any notable differences between the arcade and Genesis version?

Edit: That arcade cabinet view mode looks sweet.

There are some differences between TF3 and TFAC, Sega Retro has a good breakdown of differences.

Interestingly, this port is based on the Saturn version of Thunder Force Gold Pack 2.

I think TFAC went up today in Japan, not sure about the NA eShop though.

Sweet, I’ll grab it with my jp account. Thank goodness for region free!

Definitely looking forward to this! Just like the ability to play as the FIRE-LEO 03 in Thunder Force IV, I look forward to playing as the Rynex in TFAC, especially with the Thunder Sword available!

If it’s due to CPU it should be better, hopefully!

M2 announced today they’re currently working on porting 4 Toaplan games for ShotTriggers: Tatsujin Oh/Truxton II (that’s awesome but where’s the original Tatsujin/Truxton?), Kyuukyoku Tiger and Hishouzame (Flying Shark) and Outzone. Their original shmup Senjin is set for an autumn 2020 arcade release:

Also, Plus Alpha was released for ACA this week. Late ‘80s arcade cute ‘em up? Yeah I think I’ll be getting this:

M2 uploaded their Toaplan presentation from last week on YouTube:

I got Plus Alpha on the Switch, really enjoying it (visual style is definitely uh, “inspired” by Twinbee) but tried playing in TATE and when I flip the screen the display/play area looks smaller than when it’s not flipped (yeah I know that sounds weird). Is it actually a 4:3 ratio game? Not finding a clear answer online so far.

That’s the 1st time I heard of that game (Plus Alpha).
