The Sunday Night Shmup thread

Tonight’s Saturday Night Shmups are Plus Alpha on Switch, a very fun, laid back cute ‘em up by Jaleco which is also a “prequel” to Game Paradise and…

…a return to good old, sometimes flickery yet also very arcade faithful R-TYPE for TG-16:

Tonight’s Sunday Night Spreadshot is the Blue type weapon from Super Star Soldier, probably my favorite spreadshot weapon outside of Contra.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Episode 022 of Shoot the Core-cast is up, and we talk at length about Gaiares for the Sega Genesis. We had fun recording this episode, and we hope you’ll enjoy it, as well.STCC Ep 022 - Gaiares

Now that I have almost exhausted GraveyardDuck’s (awesome) podcasts, Shoot the Core-cast is going to be the new podcast for me to listen to whilst working overnight shifts practically alone.

Expecting great things!

Terra Cresta is on sale on Switch RN. How do people like that one?

We certainly hope we won’t disappoint! Let us know what you think - we would appreciate the feedback

I’ve always enjoyed Terra Cresta. It’s a classic, and while it’s not super complex, I think it’s solid for its era.

I have Terra Cresta ACA on Switch and find it a bit bland but it’s enjoyable enough for a really old shmup and worth picking up on sale.

I’ve listened to a few of your podcasts now and they helped pass the time on one long overnight shift, but I will have to say they are not quite for me and I was a little disappointed.

Out of the ones I have listened to the original R-type episode was enjoyed the most.

I will give my feedback below in spoiler tags as it may seem rather harsh which is not the intention:

  • In some episodes it takes far too long to get to discussion of the actual featured game.
In the latest Gaiares episode it took over 1 hour and 10 minutes before you even mentioned the game.

  • I find the question of the month feature rather interesting, however some questions on occasion are rather too similar to each other. Perhaps only the best few should be cherry picked. I personally think I would prefer this to be placed after you have discussed the featured game so we can get to what should be the focus of the podcast faster.

  • When listing to your podcasts in a playlist back to back it is sometimes hard to discern when one episode has ended and another one had started. This was especially noticeable between the Ketsui and Grid Seeker episodes as I wasn’t even aware a new episode had started for quite some time into it. Perhaps a stronger intro and outro jingle could help with this?

  • In the Ketsui episode I left more confused about its systems than before I had listened to it. Some of this of course is down to my lack of familiarity with said game (thus unavoidable), however the discussion of the open locking technique was especially confusing as even between all the participants there did not appear to be any concise consensus about it.

  • The reading out of comments and high-scores in the podcast is rather dull. Not having context of your replies or being able to see whatever images/videos that have been posted does not help and I personally think would be better left on the forums, except perhaps in the case where something particularly interesting has been posted.

  • At times when you are explaining the story and mechanics of the featured game it sounds like you are just reading directly out of a game manual.

This all said the recording equipment you are using seems great and recording levels are perfect!
I definitely enjoy episodes more when titles I have familiarity with are discussed.

Thank you for all the feedback. There are definitely some points here to consider. I don’t see us drastically changing the format, but I understand where you’re coming from with several of these points. You’ll note that I did mention in the Gaiares episode, we’d probably have to limit the number of responses to our question of the month, so we don’t spend as much time on that. And yes, it might sound like we’re reading from a manual sometimes, because we stick to the outline, but we found that helps with the flow. As we continue to record, I suspect we’ll get better at being a little more spontaneous with the discussion.

Regarding the Ketsui episode, I get what you’re saying. It was a fun roundtable discussion, but when you have 5 people trying to discuss a game, including 3 guests, all of whom are passionate about the game, and can speak about it at a high level, you’re going to get some portions of that discussion which will be harder for the audience to follow. Even with good editing, it’s hard to avoid that.

Nice! DoDonPachi is a great game! It’s probably my favorite one in the series. Its a little bit simpler than later entries in the series and I think that just makes it a little bit more enjoyable for me.

Last week my copy of Esp Ra De Psi for PS4 came in from Amazon Japan. Yeah I have it on Switch but I’ve been wanting to try out the PS4 version as well. I was just going to buy it digitally, but it turned out to be just 15 bucks more to order the physical from Amazon Japan. So I was playing that this weekend.

Really looking forward to this one. I love the Aero City cab background they have, but the one they show here with the two instruction cards on either side, is that an Aero table by chance?

Good question, not sure.

Found it, its actually a Sega 13 table, which was the precursor to their Aero City cabs. Look at the instruction cards on either side of the monitor. Its exact. This is a really deep cut by M2, I’m impressed.

Nice!!

I got the Darius Cozmic Collection (Console pack) on Switch since both vers are currently 35% off on the eshop until the end of the month and I’m very pleased with it! The screen filter options are a lot nicer-looking than their Konami collections on the same console, the control remapping and gadgets are on-point and the emulation is super nice.

I thought of only grabbing the console ver since I already have serviceable Saturn versions of 2 and Gaiden but I enjoy it so much and the arrange versions of arcade Darius II intrigue me enough I’ll also probably grab the arcade ver before the end of the month. Shame about the pricing tho!
