Speaking of Raiden games I’m planning on buying some days from now.
Decided to check out Sonic Boom, the game that Bomber Raid (a game I recently 1CCed) is based on.
They differ greatly, but I can certainly see the influence here. Instead of powering up your jet’s firepower directly, you shoot down red squadrons on the enemy team. Once you’ve killed the last one, the pilot ejects from the jet, and moves through the air under a parachute. If you pick him up, he joins you as a mini-jet on your side. You can collect several of these, and they each fire frontwards and backwards.
There are yellow squadrons too, and they give you super bombs.
The game is very tough, and looks pretty amazing for 1987 if you ask me.
Overall it’s pretty simple, and very tough… but a lot of fun. Definitely worth checking out.
I would have opened mine if you needed verification but I think that looks good.
That MUSHA auction is now up to $800 with a little under two days to go. Was $200 just a few days ago. Yikes.
I’ve been waiting to see how much it jumps at the very end. Unless someone goes balls deep and bids an item over the current buy it now listings that seems to be when the most movement happens.
$800 was the average recently. I keep an eye on MUSHA prices given I have one.
That one being so minty, it’s going to probably go over $1k.
Anyone else feel like the III weapon (Field Thunder) is the only viable weapon in this game?
I did find to be a little cumbersome in the later stages due to how slow it fires. You can easily get caught out while it’s reloading, but at the same time, I don’t feel like the others are powerful enough to really get you by. I managed to stock up enough lives and struggle through to the end, mostly due to taking the Shields as my secondary power up. This kept me alive on many occasions.
Previously I would generally go for the Multi-Fire, but found that one death could really cost you a ton of lives.
What do you guys think about the weapons?
What secondary weapons do you prefer? (homing, multi-body, shields, full fire).
I played a bit of Gun-Hed tonight and I have to agree that going shields/Weapon 3 is uber up until level 9. At that stage the game just takes a hard right turn into bullshit town. Hats off to you for powering through. I got there with 14 lives and got wiped out over and over again after the tank boss. Going to have to practice up some more and make another run at it. Seriously, the game kind of doesn’t actually start until stage 9.
All that said it’s one heck of a shooter. Really pretty. Love the desert stage and the brain stage.
Yeah it’s got a few points that gave me troubles before 9, but I had a pretty large stockpile of lives (I think 16), so getting killed a couple times wasn’t too big of a deal.
It’s pretty forgiving in the getting-powered-up-again dept. You can generally survive long enough to get back to a spot where you’re doing decent damage again.
On one occasion on the last level I ended up having to kill a boss with nothing but a pea shooter after a stupid death.
I get why people say the game is easy. I’m not sure I really agree with that sentiment though. It’s forgiving in ways, but it does get tough in the late stages.
I’m curious if anyone has found a really nice use case for the Full Fire mode over Shields, Multi-Fire or Homing. Even homing I find to be pretty low on damage.
This is cool news considering how much Boomerang goes for on Saturn these days, but I’m not sure I’d want to play either on a pad that isn’t the Saturn’s controller, guess I’ll have to get an arcade stick…
Also not holding my breath on these being good ports, since City Collection put most of their recent games on Unity engine with input latency, and while they now own ZeroDiv the Psikyo ports have their own set of issues.
Is that coming out on modern systems? Just when I was trying to scrounge some money for Cotton Reboot on Switch haha. Love the originals, this renting me to boot em up on Sunday.
Yeah, PS4 and Switch boxed releases in September.
I just remembered City Connection is putting out ports of Deathsmiles and Deathsmiles 2 this year, really hope they don’t screw them up.
Nice! Always wanted to play those but never had a 360. Been waiting patiently for a Switch port. The Switch is becoming quite the little shmup console.
Hideous input lag would actually be arcade-accurate for Guardian Force though :^)
( ._.)
I don’t even want to look up t he current going prices of the few games I still wish I had. Shit is too crazy and it’s meaningless that several boxes of the stuff I have have turned into 5-6 figures in worth if I was ever going to sell.
Just picked up Raiden V for like $1.67!
Nice! From where?
