If you get Raiden III on GOG and I can forward an exe that allows you to use gdvoodoo2 with it to increase the internal resolution to whatever you want.
This weeks marks the much-requested unprecedented rerelease of a beloved arcade classic!
I am, of course, talking about T H U N D E R C R O S S DEUCE
Played some Espgaluda both on PS2 and PCB tonight. Had a great run in the PCB, maybe I’ll clear this with enough practice. Got to the final stage without getting hit, got cocky and Seseri hit me a few times. Game is generous with extends and bombs, don’t see why I shouldn´t be able to clear it.
This is on sale right now, looks pretty good. 94% rating too.
It’s excellent! Was confined to Xbox 360 only before it hit Steam IIRC. Absolutely worth people’s time and money.
I had no idea this was on Steam, so thanks for that.
Other easily-overlooked games currently on sale:
-Psyvariar Delta
-Infinos Gaiden
Getting my ass kicked by level 4 of Sengoku Blade again. I’ll finish it one day! Going to play some Cotton Boomerang to relax now.
I finally did get my clear of Vritra a few days ago
Started up Gunbird for May’s Shmup Club game, and in typical Psikyo fashion, I’m pretty much getting wrecked left and right. However, between Yuan-Nang’s bullet-cancelling charge attack, and Tetsu’s ability to just obliterate stuff with his missiles, I’m hoping I can make some progress on Normal, but I see myself ratcheting the difficulty down a few notches, just to see more of the game, and get a clear. I can credit-feed my way to stage 5 already, though, so I feel pretty good about my ability to progress this time, all things considered.
Just gave the steam version of R-Type Final 2 a try for about an hour.
- Xbox controller support only it seems. My iBuffalo gamepad wouldn’t work at all. The game only recognized xinput. The keyboard controls on the menu are ATROCIOUS. It’s like they are punishing you for wanting to control the menu with the keyboard instead of a controller.
- It looks like it could have been made in 2010… The graphics are a bit dated I guess, but it’s not really an issue. It does look nice, but I didn’t find the visuals that impressive.
- Sound is excellent. The effects are really well done and the music is wonderful
It plays sooo good, and really reminds me of the first R-Type. The game has a very organic feel to it with lots of alien looking creatures (yay Bydo), and they integrate well into the mechanical structure of the levels. Some of the aliens are even infesting certain structures, and sometimes they swarm out of a mechanical object… Very cool!
There are no speed powerups… not sure why, but I kind of miss them. The ship is a little slow.
There are three ships to choose from to begin with, and there looks to be a bunch more. You can change ships between levels or when you use a continue, so I’m sure there will be some strategy with that later on.
The difficulty is there for sure. I was a little worried when I plowed my way through the first level with ease on normal difficulty, but it ramps up REALLY quick! By the end of stage 2, you’re already into “I’m in big trouble if I die” territory. The stage 2 boss is no joke, and it’s already throwing you into that great puzzle/memorization + skill realm like R-Type is known for. Stage 3 is a huge battleship like the original game’s stage 3, and it will test your ability to think on the fly and position your Force Unit accordingly.
That’s as far as I got for now, and I’m really impressed. Awesome game.
You can adjust speed with buttons any time!
Stage 2’s boss is still the one that gives me the most trouble, I think it triggers my impatience and causes errors or something. Once you get to Stage 5 there’s a pause and some gems appear, which one you collect determines the last 2 stages. I think there’s 3 sets, i’ve only seen 2. The first set was a pretty average vertical descent level, and a bizarre space opera type level without a boss… both didn’t look very good either. The other set was much better looking and playing.
I’m finding it’s become very time consuming to gather the resources needed for making later ships, but I have to hang in there until i unlock the R-13A!
Oh cool, I’ll have to try that. I guess it helps to actually look at the controls haha!
I already own two versions of Raiden IV and getting the Switch one too feels like Overkill (eh)… but I am quite enjoying the Mikaido arrange soundtrack.
Does the port add or fix anything else?
Been playing this and enjoying it quite a bit - it wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but it’s a real fun time for $8.
Played some Gradius II on PS1 tonight. Had my best run ever, made it to Stage 5 boss for the first time. Man the music in this game rocks. Game is hard but not insane like III. My favorite in the series definitely. Would love the PCB someday.
That’s crazy. It’s the US version too with the objectively worse box art, horrible western distributor name on it and other changes. Just get the far nicer looking Japanese version. Its half the cost.
Just got Raiden 3 off Steam from Play Asia for 2.29.
After a frustrating, unsuccessful search the last few weeks trying to find a copy of Raiden IV x Mikado Remix both locally and while currently visiting family out of town, I finally gave up last night and ordered a new copy from a dealer on eBay for $39 and free shipping. Anyone else having problems finding IV in stores? I didn’t have this issue a few years ago when got my copy of V on Switch at a local Best Buy.
Anyways, I’m really looking forward to playing it as the chaining mechanic sounds simple but fun and unlike V it has proper TATE.
Oh nice, at least you finally managed after all this time, have fun with that!
